About the Role

As a Controls Engineer at Zekelman Industries, you will play a key role in driving operational efficiency by optimizing manufacturing processes, improving productivity, and ensuring high-quality output. This position requires strong analytical and problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams to enhance safety, quality, and cost-effectiveness.

You will work closely with manufacturing, maintenance, and engineering teams to develop best practices, recommend facility and equipment improvements, and implement innovative solutions that drive continuous improvement. This role is perfect for someone who thrives in a fast-paced environment, enjoys problem-solving, and is detail-oriented.

What You’ll Do

  • Identify need for new equipment and/or modifications to existing plant equipment to improve performance, reliability, and cost savings
  • Troubleshoot electrical and controls related equipment downtime events and efficiently work to resume plant production
  • Perform custom PLC & Drive programming for all relevant systems
  • Maintain record of all plant equipment and their modifications: update technical files (drawings, schematics, bill of materials, etc.) to ensure accurate information is on file
  • Research availability of new technologies and investigate their integration into plant applications
  • Work with the maintenance planner to develop the electrical PM (preventative maintenance) schedules for effective asset life cycle management
  • Assist with training and developing maintenance staff skill sets
  • Conduct root cause investigations on equipment breakdowns
  • Monitor plant systems, analyze performance, and initiate action for optimization to achieve Plant goals.
  • Diagnose and communicate root causes of electrical malfunctions and develop corrective actions.
  • Understand and troubleshoot machine network infrastructure and PLC systems.
  • Work with all electrical equipment, power distribution systems, instrumentation systems, and equipment controls.
  • Assist with the troubleshooting and development of mechanical systems throughout the plant
  • Conserves maintenance resources by using equipment and supplies as needed to accomplish job results.

Who You Are

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent electronics technologies field and/or 5 years worked as an Engineer

  • Ability to read, understand, and update electrical prints

  • Proficiency with PLC’s Specifically: Allen Bradley with Siemens exposure preferred

  • Proficiency with Drive Setup, Programming, and Troubleshooting

  • Proficiency of AC and DC Motors/Controls

  • Proficient with AutoCAD and Microsoft Office products

  • Proficiency with Autodesk Inventor preferred

  • Proficiency of various HMI platforms preferred

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Siemens/AB PLC programming highly desired
