Job Overview:

Controls Engineer

Schedule: 1st Shift; Monday-Friday

Position Overview

We are seeking a Controls Engineer to support software requirements, controls development, debugging, and testing for mechatronic systems. This role will work closely with engineering teams to ensure software requirements are properly documented, analyzed, and translated into effective controls implementations and system models.

The ideal candidate will have strong troubleshooting skills, experience with testing equipment, and a solid understanding of electronic communication protocols and embedded control systems.

Key Responsibilities

  • Interface with engineering teams to ensure software requirements are properly documented, analyzed, and understood prior to software design and implementation.

  • Support software debugging, testing, and troubleshooting for bench and test systems.

  • Develop and improve debugging techniques to identify and resolve software and controls issues.

  • Assist with the integration of new electronics, sensors, and components into mechatronic systems.

  • Interpret system requirements and develop appropriate controls implementations and system models.

  • Build simulation control models for new products to support software development using the V-model for software development.

  • Support testing and validation activities throughout the software and controls development process.

  • Identify safety issues through suggestions, inspections, and investigations and assist with implementing appropriate corrective actions.

  • Apply knowledge of electronic and microprocessor software performance to support system development and troubleshooting.

  • Work with communication protocols including:

    • LIN

    • SENT

    • CAN

    • MODBUS

    • PWM

  • Work with supply chain personnel to evaluate external vendors and identify alternative components when needed due to supply constraints or component obsolescence.

  • Support engineering teams with troubleshooting, testing, and validation of controls and software systems.

  • Document testing results, issues, corrective actions, and software requirements as needed.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related engineering field required.

  • Experience with controls, software, electronics, or mechatronic systems.

  • Strong understanding of software requirements and development processes.

  • Experience with debugging and testing of electronic or software-based systems.

  • Comfortable working with electrical/electronic testing equipment.

  • Knowledge of communication protocols such as CAN, LIN, SENT, MODBUS, and PWM.

  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills.

  • Ability to work cross-functionally with engineering, supply chain, and other internal teams.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

This position is heavily focused on supporting software requirements, debugging, and testing. You will help engineering teams translate requirements into controls solutions, troubleshoot software and electronic systems, and validate new components and products. Experience working hands-on with testing equipment and communication protocols will be especially valuable.
