WHAT YOU GET TO DO
The Controls Design Engineer I supports the review, validation, and documentation of control system designs to ensure compliance with KNAPP standards and readiness for commissioning. Working with Controls Commissioning and cross-functional teams, this role helps identify design risks, maintain documentation, and provide technical support during in-house testing, without ownership of on-site commissioning.
This position is a developmental opportunity designed to support career growth for KNAPP employees transitioning from commissioning or technical roles, while remaining open to external candidates with relevant experience and the ability to learn KNAPP systems and processes.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
System Design Review & Quality Assurance
- Perform pre-defined system design reviews to verify compliance with KNAPP Control Standards.
- Verify the completeness, accuracy and proper placement of control system actuators and sensors within engineering layouts.
- Review and confirm station definitions against standard configurations and approved deviations.
- Coordinate with cross-functional engineering and processing teams to ensure design completeness, accuracy, and timely resolution of open items while proactively resolving identified design gaps and inconsistencies.
- Provide controls-related design clarification to processing and engineering teams as needed to support commissioning readiness. Review and validate transport goods specifications for accuracy and alignment with KNAPP control system standards.
- Create and maintain Control Design Documentation for each project that defines expected control system behavior and identifies approved non-standard developments.
Controls Project Realization Support
- Collect, validate, and maintain controls-related planning and engineering documents throughout the project lifecycle.
- Validate planning data to ensure compatibility with KNAPP commissioning tools, including the EDM Generator.
- Support Controls Commissioning teams beginning with controls preparation kick-off through successful completion of in-house testing.
- Support knowledge transfer and basic user guidance related to EDM Generator usage in collaboration with senior controls and commissioning resources
Documentation and Continuous Improvement
- Analyze feedback from Controls Commissioning Engineers to identify recurring design issues and improvement opportunities.
- Provide process- and quality-related feedback to interface and contributing departments to improve cross-functional coordination and outcomes.
- Document and maintain controls-related processes, templates, and standards used within Controls Commissioning support activities.
- Deliver regular status updates, findings, and improvement recommendations to Supporting Services and Controls Commissioning leadership.
WHAT YOU HAVE
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology, engineering or related field preferred, or equivalent work experience
- Minimum of 3 years supporting KNAPP control system controls design, or automation engineering activities, preferably within KNAPP or similar automated logistics environments Demonstrated ability to perform at an intermediate level in control systems design, validation, and commissioning preparation activities, including interpretation of system functionality, components, and interfaces
- Exposure to multiple KNAPP products and project types preferred
- Intermediate ability to collaborate effectively across engineering, software, and commissioning teams, contributing to resolution of design gaps and supporting project readiness
- Demonstrated intermediate-level communication skills (verbal, written, and digital), with the ability to clearly convey technical information to cross-functional stakeholders Intermediate ability to collaborate effectively across engineering, software, and commissioning teams Team-oriented and solution-based mindset
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage changing priorities and maintain accuracy across multiple project deliverables
- Strong attention to detail with demonstrated commitment to safety standards and quality expectations Exposure to project coordination or structured engineering workflows preferred
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings
Working Conditions and Environment:

- Professional office etiquette is required at all times
- Travel required up to 20%
- Physical requirements: sitting for long periods of time, standing, walking, speaking, visual acuity, finger dexterity, listening, reaching at arm’s length, and lifting up to 30 pounds
