Description
GS Global Resources, a growing distributor, integrator, and manufacturer located in Mukwonago, Wisconsin, is a nationally recognized supplier of mobile and industrial hydraulic and electronic control systems. We have an immediate opening for a Control Systems Project Engineer to join our engineering team.
This position is focused primarily on the development of electronic and software control systems for mobile and off-highway equipment, including forestry machines, construction equipment, mining equipment, specialty vehicles, and other mobile machinery.
This is not primarily a traditional factory-automation PLC position. Our Control Systems Project Engineers develop complete machine-control applications primarily using Parker IQAN and CODESYS-based control platforms. Applications commonly integrate controllers, displays, joysticks, sensors, distributed I/O, cameras, telematics devices, and electrohydraulic components over CAN networks.
The engineer assigned to a project typically owns the controls portion of that project from initial requirements through software development, electrical design, testing, machine startup, and production support.
Job Responsibilities
As a Control Systems Project Engineer, you will:
- Design and develop electronic control systems for mobile and off-highway equipment.
- Develop machine-control application software using Parker IQAN, CODESYS/IEC 61131-3 platforms, and similar mobile-controller development environments.
- Develop control logic using Function Block programming, Structured Text, and other appropriate IEC 61131-3 programming methods.
- Design and integrate CAN-based vehicle networks, with a strong emphasis on SAE J1939.
- Integrate mobile controllers, HMIs/displays, joysticks, sensors, encoders, proportional valves, distributed I/O modules, cameras, telematics systems, and other machine devices.
- Develop motion-control strategies for mobile equipment, including systems that interact with hydraulic and electromechanical actuators.
- Select appropriate control-system hardware based on application requirements, environmental conditions, packaging constraints, and machine architecture.
- Create electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and harness documentation using SOLIDWORKS Electrical.
- Develop and maintain complete engineering documentation for assigned projects.
- Perform bench testing, system validation, troubleshooting, and machine-level commissioning.
- Work directly with prototype and production equipment to diagnose electrical, software, communication, and system-integration issues.
- Support manufacturing during initial production builds and provide hands-on troubleshooting when assigned projects enter production.
- Travel to customer locations as needed for machine startup, commissioning, troubleshooting, or application support.
- Coordinate projects with customers, sales, manufacturing, suppliers, designers, and other engineering disciplines.
- Manage multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining schedules, technical requirements, documentation, and customer commitments.
This is a hands-on engineering position. Engineers should expect to work directly with machines, wiring, controllers, sensors, CAN networks, and production equipment in addition to performing software development and electrical design.
Ideal Candidate
The strongest candidate will have direct experience developing mobile-machine or off-highway control systems and will understand how software, electrical hardware, communication networks, and physical machine behavior come together as a complete system.
Direct experience with one or more of the following is highly desirable:
- Parker IQAN
- CODESYS
- Danfoss mobile controls
- Epec controllers
- IFM mobile controls
- Other programmable mobile-machine control platforms
- SAE J1939 and CAN bus systems
- Mobile motion-control applications
- Construction, agricultural, forestry, mining, material-handling, or other off-highway equipment
Candidates whose primary background is traditional industrial PLC automation may also be considered, particularly when they demonstrate strong application-development skills, complete project ownership, electrical-system knowledge, motion-control experience, and the ability to quickly transition into mobile-machine controls.
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Controls Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
- Approximately 2–5+ years of applicable engineering experience, depending on the relevance of previous mobile-controls experience.
- Demonstrated experience developing electronic control systems and control logic.
- Experience with programmable controllers and application software.
- Experience with SAE J1939, CAN bus, or similar distributed communication networks strongly preferred.
- Experience with Parker IQAN, CODESYS, or another mobile-controller development environment strongly preferred.
- Understanding of real-time machine control and motion-control applications.
- Ability to understand physical machine operation, packaging constraints, sensor feedback, actuator behavior, and system-level interactions.
- Ability to create and understand electrical schematics and wiring/harness documentation.
- Experience with SOLIDWORKS Electrical or similar electrical CAD software preferred.
- Experience troubleshooting electrical and control systems using tools such as CAN-analysis software, CAN interfaces, oscilloscopes, multimeters, datalogging tools, and other diagnostic equipment.
- Familiarity with mobile hydraulic systems is preferred, but extensive hydraulic experience is not required.
- Ability to manage multiple engineering projects and communicate effectively with customers, suppliers, manufacturing personnel, and other engineers.
Experience with functional safety standards or safety-related machine controls is beneficial but not required.
Travel and Work Environment
This position is primarily based at our Mukwonago, Wisconsin facility and includes regular interaction with engineering, manufacturing, and prototype equipment.
Engineers will periodically work on the production floor or directly on equipment during machine startup and troubleshooting.
Customer-site travel is limited and generally occurs for commissioning or technical support. Overnight travel is typically only required a few times per year, with little to no routine weekend travel.
