Job Description
Job Description: Control Panel Designer
About the Role
We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Control Panel Designer to join our engineering team. In this role, you will own the full lifecycle of industrial control panel design—from component selection and schematic development to vendor coordination and high-voltage validation. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams across mechanical, electrical, and manufacturing disciplines to deliver robust, compliant, and high-quality control panels that meet stringent safety standards.
Key Responsibilities
Design industrial control panels in compliance with NEC (NFPA 70) and UL 508A standards.
Develop complete control panel schematics, layouts, and bills of materials (BOM) using EPLAN or equivalent tools.
Select appropriate components, including connectors, wire harnesses, branch circuit protection devices (breakers, fuses), and power conversion equipment (drives, transformers, rectifiers).
Specify components suitable for high-voltage applications up to 600V AC and 2000V DC.
Partner with third-party panel fabrication vendors to translate design concepts into fully built assemblies.
Plan and oversee high-voltage testing procedures, including hipot, insulation resistance, and functional validation.
Collaborate with mechanical engineers on enclosure selection, thermal management, and system integration.
Support DFMEA activities, identifying potential failure modes and implementing risk mitigation strategies.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field with 5+ years of relevant experience; or a Master’s degree with 3+ years of experience.
Proficiency in panel design software such as EPLAN or equivalent.
Demonstrated experience designing control panels in accordance with NEC and UL 508A standards.
Hands-on experience with high-voltage testing procedures and associated safety protocols.
Strong understanding of branch circuit protection coordination, wire sizing, and power conversion systems.
Experience managing third-party vendors through design, fabrication, and acceptance phases.
Familiarity with PLM tools (e.g., Arena, Teamcenter), product development tools (e.g., Jira), and requirements management systems (e.g., Jama).
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working with a UL 508A Recognized Panel Shop or familiarity with the UL listing process.
NFPA 70E certification or experience conducting arc flash studies.
Background in industries such as industrial automation, EV charging infrastructure, energy storage, or semiconductor equipment.
Experience with branch protection coordination simulation tools such as ETAP.
