KEY RESPONSIBILITIES & ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
COMPOST PRODUCTION AND QUALITY CONTROL
- Coordinate incoming materials for composting and monitor all material onsite, both composted and raw.
- Responsible for development and application of Standard Operating Procedures for the composting process, refinement of the method for composting
- Maintenance of all compost facility records, ensuring that data is current within a 24 - 36 hour time period. Records include but are not limited to:
- Full documentation of windrows to include date, composition and ingredient quantities
- Data collection of things such as temperature, CO2, Volume and Moisture
- Recording of the status and “grade” of windrows such as estimation to maturity for farm or retail application based on the standards laid out in the Hirzel Farms Composting Handbook.
RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT
- Data interpretation for items such as compost temperature profiles
- Maintenance of database for raw information to apply to current and future projects
- Conduct experimental compost trials such as new compost recipes, feasibility studies, compost application rates and soil fertility
- Education and outreach
- Hosting various guests at the facility
- Creating educational tools to inform on the composting process
- Brand ambassador
- Resident expert on all things compost
FACILITY MANAGEMENT
- Management of surface water, such as ponding and runoff
- Responsible for leachate field application equipment such as pumps, bubblers, irrigation pipes, and reels
- Serve as EPA Inspection Liaison and assume responsibility for all Ohio EPA-mandated paperwork
- Site upkeep (lawn/landscape) and improvements

- Demonstrate importance of compliance with all Company policies and procedures, state and federal regulations.

- Daily requirements:
- Bending, twisting, turning, reaching below the knee, pushing, pulling, squatting, kneeling, standing, walking, sitting
- Lifting requirements:
- Will regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds
- Will frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree preferred (life sciences, Geology, Chemistry, Physics, Environmental Science)
- At least 2 years prior compost/agriculture experience preferred
- Computer proficiency in Statistical Modeling and reporting (Excel, Drive, Word, etc.)
- Prior experience in laboratory experimentation (set up and managing simple compost experiments)
