What You Will Achieve

As part of the Comparative Medicine Executive team, you will support Comparative Medicine (CM) and all Worldwide Research, Development and Medical (WRDM) sites that have a vivarium. Interact with all CM groups such as Global Science & Technology (GS&T), Regulatory, Site Administrative and Business Resources (SABR), Veterinary Science and Technology (VST), Operations, and Leadership Teams (LTs). Responsible for strategic management of Animal Facility operations, including vivarium: equipment, planning, renovations, construction, design, and project management. Oversight and management of CM capital budgets. Responsible for the successful strategic partnership with Global Workplace Solutions (GWS) and Finance and Procurement to support Comparative Medicine across all WRDM sites. Works across sites to ensure CM operations run smoothly in accordance with global and site guidelines, partner level agreements, and expectations from partner lines.

Responsible for the effectiveness of the site operations networks in promoting cross site efficiencies where appropriate and applicable.

How You Will Achieve It

  • Represents CM as the subject matter expert with vivarium upgrades, renovations, design, and new construction to ensure all best fit for purpose.

  • Develops long-range plan for replacement of equipment, along with repairs to facility infrastructure, and maintenance programs.

  • Provides strategic leadership and planning for vivarium capital projects and budgets including determining basis of design (BOD), User Requirement Specifications (URS) during new construction or renovations.

  • Lead and tracks procurement cycle for capital assets which includes leading request for proposals (RFP), ensuring BODs/URS include factory and site acceptance tests (FAT/SAT) as appropriate, and lead/participate in FATs and SATs.

  • Responsible for managing the CM Business Continuity Plan with linkages to CM site plans. Represent CM as the lead for Business Continuity (BC) on the Worldwide Research and Development BC Team.

  • Strategic partner to influence thinking and direction of resource and project management for Global Operations in supporting all PFE vivaria.

  • Manage master service agreements with external partners / vendors.

  • Continuous refinement of internal metrics programs (Global Vivarium Capacity Model (GVCM- Colony Management Module of Pfizer’s Animal Welfare System (PAWS)), Activity Tracker (AT), Technical Services Requests (TSR) and dashboard data and other systems with other global team representatives.

  • Oversight of animal facility security access system.

Will be required to work under one of the following: The United States Department of Agriculture Animal Welfare Act and associated Regulations and Standards, the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, Good Laboratory Practices and AALAC accreditation standards.

Qualifications

Basic

  • BS/BA required with 14+ years lab animal science / operations experience or MA/MBA/MS with 12+ years lab animal science / operations or PhD with 9+ years of lab animal / operations experience or DVM with 4+ years of lab animal / operations experience required.

  • Experience in the management of vivarium operations with expertise in husbandry and operations of multiple large and small animal species.

  • Extensive experience in laboratory animal facility renovation, design, and new construction.

  • Understands budgets (capital and operational) and how they are modeled to support decision making and long-term planning

  • Candidate demonstrates a breadth of diverse leadership experiences and capabilities including: the ability to influence and collaborate with peers, develop and coach others, oversee and guide the work of other colleagues to achieve meaningful outcomes and create business impact.

Preferred

  • Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATg) preferred

  • Certified Manager of Animal Resources (CMAR) preferred.

  • Developed and maintained internal and external industry networks of technical experts to draw upon for expertise, advice, and services (Laboratory Animal management Association (LAMA), American Association Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS), Academia, Suppliers

  • Project management certification (PMP) and Applied Implementation Methodologies (AIM) certification a plus

  • Pharmaceutical industry experience

  • Analytical and Strategic Thinking

    • Ability to think about complex issues using scientific/critical thinking approach to solving problems and makes sound judgments.

    • Asks appropriate questions to clarify issues

    • Establishes baseline; compares with benchmarks; establishes strategy that meets business needs.

    • Discerns from available data what should be pertinent to upper levels of management.

Physical/Mental Requirements

  • For this position, if at a site with nonhuman primates, you are expected to enter the nonhuman primate areas as part of your job responsibilities, a pre-hire requirement is either providing proof of measles immunity or receiving the measles vaccination before hire.

Non-Standard Work Schedule

  • 10-20% travel to other Comparative Medicine sites

  • Location: Any CM site- Cambridge, MA / Groton, CT / La Jolla, CA / Pearl River, NY)

This is an essential role who may be required to perform essential services remotely. During emergency situations or where operations is suspended this role must be available to assist on site personnel until routine operations is restored.
