Primary Function:
The CNC Programmer is responsible for translating engineering drawings and CAD models into machine programs to manufacture prototype and production parts to customer specifications. This role involves programming a variety of machines—including mills, lathes, and combination machines—while optimizing existing programs to improve efficiency, cycle times, and quality in production.
Position Responsibilities (including but not limited to):
Programming & Setup:
- Program CNC machinery using Mastercam and other software to efficiently manufacture parts.
- Perform machine setups for production work, as needed.
- Develop and maintain an organized program and tool library.
Quality & Troubleshooting:
- Inspect workpieces as needed for conformance to specifications using precision measuring instruments.
- Detect and troubleshoot equipment malfunctions and adjust machine settings to minimize downtime.
- Work with the quality and design members to ensure production accuracy.
Process Improvement & Collaboration:
- Participate in root cause analysis of process failures and recommend process improvements using statistical methods.
- Implement mistake-proofing (poka-yoke) techniques to enhance efficiency and reduce waste.
Operational Excellence & Maintenance:
- Support Lean Manufacturing initiatives, including participating in GEMBA walks and Kaizen events.
- Maintain a clean work area and perform basic preventative maintenance on equipment.
Other:
- Perform additional duties as assigned by management.
Technical Skills:
- Proficiency in Mastercam (primary) and other CAM software.
- Strong understanding of GD&T and the ability to interpret complex engineering drawings.
- Knowledge of precision measuring instruments (e.g., micrometers, calipers, CMM).
- Experience with vertical machining centers, mill-turns, manual milling, and turning.
- Material science expertise, particularly in metalworking.
Soft Skills & Attributes:
- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Strong communication skills (written and verbal).
- Effective time management and ability to prioritize tasks.
- Ability to work collaboratively with engineers, machinists, and production teams.
Qualifications Required:
- 5+ years of CNC programming experience in a manufacturing environment.
- Advanced proficiency in Mastercam (or equivalent CAM software).
- Strong understanding of GD&T, blueprint reading, and tolerancing.
- Proven ability to optimize CNC programs to improve efficiency and reduce cycle time.
- Hands-on experience with CNC milling and turning, including setting up and troubleshooting programs.
- Deep knowledge of cutting tools, speeds & feeds, and material behaviors, particularly with stainless steel and other metals.
