Job Overview:

CNC Mill Setup Operator

**Location: **Mendota Heights, MN **Department: **Engineering

**Reports to: **Tool & Die Manager **Position: **Full-time

What You’ll Be Doing

As a CNC Mill Setup Operator, you’ll set up and operate CNC vertical and horizontal milling machines to produce precision die components, fixtures, gages, and metal-stamped parts. You’ll prepare tools and materials, review programs and setup sheets, make machine adjustments, and inspect parts to ensure they meet exact specifications. Your work helps keep production accurate, efficient, and on schedule.

A Day in the Life

  • Set up CNC vertical and horizontal milling machines; install the correct tools, fixtures, and workpieces based on drawings and setup instructions.
  • Review setup sheets with the programmer, confirm program details and required tooling, and locate and load the correct program into the machine controller.
  • Align workpieces on the X, Y, and Z axes using a dial indicator or machine probe.
  • Load and position materials safely using the appropriate method, including manual placement, die carts, vises, toe clamps, forklifts, or overhead hoists as needed.
  • Adjust offsets, speeds, feeds, cutting depths, and other settings to produce accurate features and meet tight tolerances—as close as .0002 inches.
  • Read blueprints and die design prints to confirm dimensions, specifications, and tolerances. Work with toolmakers or designers to determine where and how much grind stock to leave on tool steel parts.
  • Design, build, set up, and qualify fixtures used in production machining of metal-stamped parts.
  • Inspect parts during and after machining using precision measurement tools such as micrometers, calipers, and CMM equipment, as applicable.
  • Troubleshoot tool wear, misalignment, and other machining issues. Work with maintenance or engineering on more complex problems to reduce downtime and prevent defects.
  • Clean, lubricate, and maintain machines; check and replace worn tools or parts as needed.
  • Maintain accurate records of setups, inspections, maintenance, machine performance, downtime, and part quality.
  • Look for ways to improve machining processes, productivity, and part quality; stay current with tools and techniques.
  • Follow all safety procedures and company requirements, and perform other assigned duties as needed.

You’re a Great Fit If You

  • Have strong mechanical aptitude and a hands-on approach to problem-solving.
  • Have experience setting up and operating CNC milling machines and understand G-code and CAM software.
  • Can read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and die design prints.
  • Can use precision measurement tools such as micrometers, calipers, and CMM equipment to verify dimensions and tolerances.
  • Are comfortable applying geometry, trigonometry, fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to machining work.
  • Pay close attention to detail and take pride in producing accurate, high-quality parts.
  • Communicate clearly, work well with others, and know when to ask questions or involve a teammate.
  • Are safety-minded, adaptable, and interested in learning and improving processes.

Preferred Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred; technical training or a technical degree is a plus. An equivalent combination of education and experience may also be considered.
  • Two to five years of experience in a manufacturing environment, preferably with CNC milling.
  • Experience designing, setting up, and qualifying fixtures for production machining.

Physical Requirements

This role requires frequent standing, walking, moving, and using your hands to handle tools and materials. You’ll need the ability to see fine details, judge depth and distance, adjust focus, and maintain concentration during repetitive tasks and extended machining runs. The role regularly requires lifting or moving up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to 50 pounds. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable qualified individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the job.

Why Work With Us?

Join a team that values precision, craftsmanship, and getting the job done right. As a CNC Mill Setup Operator, you’ll work on detailed machining projects, help produce the components that keep production moving, and contribute ideas that improve quality and efficiency. You’ll have opportunities to build your skills and grow your career alongside an experienced team.
