Job Title: CNC Machinist (Mill & Lathe)

Job Summary:

A CNC Machinist (Mill & Lathe) is responsible for setting up, operating, and maintaining CNC milling and lathe machines to produce high-precision parts according to blueprints, specifications, and CAD designs. This role requires a deep understanding of machining processes, machine tool operation, and quality control to ensure the final product meets all required tolerances and standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Machine Setup and Operation:

    • Set up and operate CNC milling and lathe machines according to work orders, blueprints, or engineering drawings.

    • Select appropriate tools, fixtures, and equipment for machining operations.

    • Load programs into CNC machines and ensure they are correctly configured for part production.

  2. Programming:

    • Read and interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and CAD files to program machines accurately.

    • Use CNC programming languages (e.g., G-code) and software to input machine instructions.

    • Modify and optimize programs for better efficiency or to correct errors during production.

  3. Machining Operations:

    • Perform various machining operations, including turning, milling, drilling, and grinding, on materials such as metals, plastics, and composites.

    • Monitor machine performance and adjust settings as needed to maintain part quality and machine efficiency.

    • Operate both vertical and horizontal mills as well as CNC lathes with multi-axis capability.

  4. Quality Control:

    • Measure and inspect finished parts using tools such as calipers, micrometers, and height gauges to ensure they meet required tolerances.

    • Perform regular maintenance on machines to prevent downtime and ensure optimal machine performance.

    • Troubleshoot and resolve machining issues to prevent production delays or defects.

  5. Safety and Compliance:

    • Follow all safety guidelines and procedures while operating machinery and handling materials.

    • Maintain a clean and organized work area to ensure a safe working environment.

    • Adhere to all company policies and industry regulations regarding machining and material handling.

  6. Collaboration and Communication:

    • Work closely with engineers, designers, and other team members to ensure the production of high-quality parts.

    • Communicate any issues or concerns about machine performance or part quality to supervisors and maintenance personnel.

  7. Maintenance and Upkeep:

    • Perform routine maintenance on CNC machines to keep them in proper working condition.

    • Troubleshoot and resolve mechanical and electrical issues that arise during production.

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Proven experience as a CNC machinist with expertise in both mill and lathe operations.

  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints, technical drawings, and CAD files.

  • Strong understanding of CNC programming, including G-code and M-code.

  • Experience with various types of CNC machines, including vertical and horizontal mills, CNC lathes, and multi-axis machines.

  • Familiarity with CNC machine controls and programming software.

  • Ability to use precision measurement tools (micrometers, calipers, height gauges).

  • Good problem-solving skills and attention to detail.

  • Strong communication and teamwork abilities.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certification in CNC machining or related fields (e.g., CNC Programmer Certification).

  • Experience with CAD/CAM software such as Mastercam or SolidWorks.

  • Knowledge of different materials and their machining requirements.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift and move heavy parts and tools (up to 50 lbs).

  • Comfortable standing for extended periods and working in a factory or machine shop environment.

  • Ability to work with precision tools and equipment in a high-accuracy setting.

You should be proficient in:

  • GD&T
  • CNC Programming
  • M-Code

Machines & technologies you'll use:

  • CNC Mill (3-4 axis VMC) (Fanuc, Bridgeport, Haas, Makino, Dmg Mori Seiki)
  • CNC Lathe (2-4 axis) (Haas, Dmg Mori Seiki)
  • CNC Swiss Lathe
  • CNC Mill (5+ axis VMC) (Mazak, Haas)
  • CNC Lathe (5+ axis) (Mazak, Okuma, Dmg Mori Seiki)
