Position Summary
The CNC Machinist is responsible for setting up and operating CNC turning, milling, or mill-turn equipment to produce precision machined components that meet customer specifications and quality requirements. This role includes machine operation, in-process inspection, documentation, and maintaining compliance with AS9100 and customer-specific requirements.
The Lead Machinist will also support department scheduling, programming, troubleshooting, process improvements, and first-piece inspections.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Set up and operate CNC turning, milling, and mill-turn equipment.
- Machine components to blueprint and customer specifications.
- Perform in-process inspections using precision measuring equipment.
- Read and interpret engineering drawings, work instructions, and manufacturing documentation.
- Deburr and finish machined components to required specifications.
- Maintain part identification, traceability, and lot segregation.
- Identify, segregate, and report nonconforming material and foreign object debris (FOD).
- Complete job travelers, inspection records, and production documentation accurately.
- Communicate quality concerns, damaged material, or process issues promptly.
- Assist with packaging and shipment of finished products as needed.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
- Follow all company safety, quality, and customer requirements.
Lead Responsibilities
- Coordinate workflow and scheduling within the turning or milling department.
- Troubleshoot machining, tooling, programming, and process issues.
- Create, modify, and optimize CNC programs.
- Support first-piece inspections and process validation activities.
- Share knowledge, support problem solving, and help develop machining capabilities across the department.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives focused on quality, efficiency, and throughput.
Qualifications
- CNC machining experience in a manufacturing environment.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and engineering drawings.
- Proficiency using calipers, micrometers, indicators, and other precision measuring equipment.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
- Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Preferred Qualifications
- Understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
- Experience working in an AS9100 manufacturing environment.
- Brown & Sharpe Micro-Val CMM experience.
- Experience with CMM Manager software.
- Previous setup, programming, troubleshooting, or leadership experience.
Education
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Technical, vocational, or trade school training preferred.
Reporting Relationship
- Reports to the Turning or Milling Lead.
- Lead Machinists report directly to the General Manager.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand and move throughout the workday.
- Ability to lift, carry, and move machined components and materials.
- Manual dexterity required for machine operation and inspection activities.
Work Environment
- Clean and organized manufacturing facility.
- Hearing protection required in designated areas.
- Eye protection required during designated operations.
Overtime
Occasional overtime based on production schedules and business needs.
