Job Description

We are looking for a 5-Axis Setup Machinist who can independently set up and run complex parts on multi-axis CNC machines.

Role Overview

The 5-Axis Setup Machinist is responsible for setting up, proving out, and running complex CNC programs on multi-axis machining centers.

This is a hands-on, high-skill role requiring strong understanding of machining strategy, workholding, tooling, and process control. You will work on both prototype and production aerospace components, including larger structural parts, and will be expected to take ownership of setups from start to first article.

This is not a button-pushing role—this position requires experience, judgment, and attention to detail.

Responsibilities

• Set up and operate 5-axis CNC machining centers (OKK, Okuma, Kitamura, Makino, or similar)
• Interpret setup sheets, tooling lists, and CNC programs to execute efficient setups
• Install and qualify tooling, fixtures, and workholding for complex parts
• Perform first article prove-out, making necessary offsets and minor program adjustments
• Run parts to print, ensuring compliance with tight tolerances and surface finish requirements
• Work with engineering and programmers to resolve issues during setup and production
• Inspect parts using standard inspection tools (calipers, micrometers, height gauges, etc.)
• Maintain setup efficiency while ensuring quality and repeatability
• Troubleshoot machining issues including tool wear, chatter, and dimensional variation
• Maintain clean and organized work area and follow all shop procedures

Qualifications

Required

• 5+ years of CNC machining experience, including significant 5-axis setup experience
• Proven ability to independently set up and run complex parts
• Strong understanding of multi-axis machining strategies and toolpaths
• Experience working with tight-tolerance aerospace components
• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and GD&T
• Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail

Preferred

• Experience machining large aerostructural components
• Experience with machines such as OKK, Okuma, Kitamura, Makino, or similar high-end equipment
• Experience with both aluminum and hard metals including stainless steels and nickel-based alloys (e.g., Inconel)

• Tombstones and multi-part setups
• Vacuum fixtures (for thin-wall aluminum parts)
• Hydraulic and mechanical clamping systems
• Shrink-fit, hydraulic, and high-performance toolholding
• High-feed milling, dynamic toolpaths, and advanced cutting strategies
• Experience in aerospace or AS9100 environments
