Amsted Rail has an immediate opening for a 2nd shift Maintenance Shop Machinist with a CNC designation at its operation in Granite City, Illinois.

This position is responsible for the set-up and operation of numeric control/CNC machines and machining centers for diversified production work while inspecting to assure that tolerances and specifications are maintained.

  • Set up machines for a variety of parts using engineering drawing

  • Run a variety of NC/CNC machines without assistance

  • Change machine tool as necessary

  • Inspect parts to required tolerances and specifications per in-process inspection and/or engineering drawing and/or visual requirements. Operator finishes parts to appropriate quality standards.

  • Utilization of hoist/overhead crane/forklift to position castings in workspace

  • Operation of hand/pneumatic tools

  • Perform routine maintenance to equipment

  • Perform minor assembly functions as required

  • Maintain acceptable levels of production

  • Report equipment and/or material problems

  • Make program changes

  • Operate a laser tracker

  • Work safely and maintain general cleanliness of area with use of broom, shovel, powered floor sweeper, vacuum

  • Record data/metrics as applicable via paper or computer- Accurately enter time and labor reporting daily

  • Document any defects properly

  • General laboring activities

  • Safety: Demonstrates awareness of safety requirements in assigned work areas and wears appropriate PPE for assigned work.

  • Quality: Machine and inspect completed machined castings to required dimensions with appropriate tolerances.

  • Training: Accepts training and coaching from supervision and outside machining resources.

Requirements:

  • 2 years’ experience in a manufacturing position preferred
  • Machining Technology certification from SWIC or equivalent trade/vocational school
  • High School Diploma/GED or international equivalent
  • Capability to read and interpret blueprints and engineering drawings/sketches
  • Basic math and reading skills
  • Understanding of the Cartesian coordinate system (X-Y axis)
  • Basic understanding of Geometric tolerancing and basic machine shop practices
  • Ability to use micrometers and other precision measuring gages and equipment
  • Ability to work independently
  • Capability to use hand tools safely
