Summary

The CNC Machinist has the primary responsibility of operating computer numeric controlled production equipment to produce quality parts. Must be able to set up and operate 4-axis and 5-axis mills and lathes. Most machining and set ups are performed on HAAS CNC equipment. 


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Under general supervision, must be able to perform a variety of job duties including, but not limited to: 

  • Sets up and runs various types of NC machines including mills and lathes, to complete parts to dimensional requirements.
  • Loads machine control tape, checks and makes required control settings. Places machine in operation and observes proper traverse to starting point before beginning operation.
  • Operates machine in manual mode to make unprogrammed changes where location can be determined by direct measurement.
  • Manually enters dimensional data into numerical control console for short run jobs or during the machining cycle as necessary.
  • Performs rework wherein the operations are essentially the same as described above.
  • Grinds, sharpens and touches up own cutting tools as required.
  • Develop shop aid tools to support machining and assembly processes. 
  • Must have working knowledge of all codes and functions of numerical control machines. 
  • Make adjustments and troubleshoot machine as needed.
  • Performs first article, in-process and final dimensional inspections per blueprint for quality approval. 
  • Perform regular PMs on equipment to ensure equipment is safe and operating effectively. 
  • Take the initiative to identify problems, develop alternative and proactive solutions and gather/present information in a timely manner. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

  • High School Degree or General Education Degree; or 3-5 years of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Previous experience in the aerospace industry highly desired. 
  • Certification in machine shop technology, blueprint reading and programing, highly desired.
  • Experience with programming software, specifically MasterCam, highly desired.  


Required Skills:

  • Language: Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply a general understanding to carry out detailed, written and oral instructions. Ability to deal with and solve problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Mathematical Ability: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Other Abilities: Must be able to use shop tools, handbooks, tables, and charts. Must know proper rakes and clearances of tool bits and drills. Must have proficiency in using precision measuring instruments, such as calipers, micrometers, depth gauges, tape measure, indicators, etc. Must be able to read and interrupt detailed blueprints and work orders. Must be proficient with the operations of manual mills, lathe, drill presses, routers, band saws, belt sanders, table saws. Must be able to setup and operate one or more manufacturing machines, including a CNC lathe, mill drill, grinding machine, CNC mill machine and deburring. 

Physical Demands/ Work Environment:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be able to stand and sit 6 to 8 hours a day. Must be able to work with their hands, arms and be extremely accurate. Must be able to walk, sit, stoop, or kneel on a regular basis. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Must be able to lift and/or move up to 40 pounds on an occasional basis. 
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving high-speed machinery and mechanical parts. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions. outside weather conditions, machine oils, metal fillings, acetone, paints, solvents, grease, cutting fluids, fumes, or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock or vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
