General Summary

Lead an assigned civil project or major scope with multiple operations or work areas for the Texas Civil Group, emphasizing mass grading, and large-scale site development. Projects may support utility-scale solar, wind energy, battery energy storage systems (BESS), and substations. Directs Superintendent I personnel, foremen, and craft employees and coordinates subcontractor interfaces, resources, safety, quality, and production. Strong transferable civil leadership is the foundation; direct energy-sector experience is preferred.

Essential Job Accountabilities


1. Safety Leadership – Lead Granite’s safety program across assigned operations; verify pre-task planning, coach field leaders, stop unsafe work, and confirm corrective actions before work resumes.


2. Environmental Protection – Coordinate compliance with project environmental requirements, including stormwater pollution prevention plan (SWPPP) measures, erosion and sediment controls, dust suppression, and spill prevention across active work areas.


3. Integrated Civil Execution – Lead clearing, earthwork, mass and finish grading, roads, drainage, stabilization, and related site work to meet approved plans, specifications, budgets, and schedules.


4. Field Planning and Sequencing – Develop execution and look-ahead plans with project management; sequence work areas, balance cut and fill, plan haul routes and access, and coordinate handoffs between operations.


5. Leadership and Staffing – Direct and develop Superintendent I personnel and foremen; forecast staffing, support hiring within delegated authority, and address performance and training needs with management.


6. Resource Management – Balance crews, equipment fleets, materials, and subcontractor support across operations; coordinate mobilization, maintenance, utilization, and demobilization.


7. Production and Financial Performance – Ensure accurate quantity and resource reporting; review unit production, labor and equipment costs, and rework with project management. Provide field input to cost-to-complete forecasts and lead corrective or recovery plans.


8. Survey and Grade Control – Coordinate survey and grade-control support; verify use of current approved plans and machine-control files and resolve discrepancies with appropriate technical personnel.


9. Quality and Turnover – Coordinate inspection and testing plans, grading tolerances, drainage, moisture and compaction requirements, and acceptance checks; resolve deficiencies and plan phased turnover with complete supporting records.


10. Trade and Client Coordination – Represent assigned field operations in coordination meetings; resolve access and sequencing conflicts with subcontractors, suppliers, client representatives, and other trades in coordination with project management.


11. Change, Risk, and Reporting – Identify differing conditions, scope changes, and schedule risks; ensure timely daily reports, photos, and project-team notification. Coordinate commitments with project management within delegated authority and support requests for information and change orders.


12. Completion and Improvement - Lead punch-list completion, site restoration, and field closeout; capture lessons learned, standardize effective practices, and develop field leaders for future projects.




Education

  • High School Diploma or Equivalency.


Work Experience

  • 8+ years in construction management and/or craft supervision experience (i.e. Foreman) in heavy civil construction, earthwork, mass grading, or comparable site development.
  • Demonstrated leadership of multiple crews or concurrent civil operations, including direction of foremen or superintendents and coordination of staffing, equipment, quality, production, and schedule priorities.
  • Experience evaluating field productive and cost performance, resolving construction constraints, and implementing coordinated corrective or recovery plans.

Preferred


  • Civil experience supporting utility-scale solar, wind, BESS, or substations, including grading, access roads, crane or equipment pads, drainage, or aggregate surfacing. Direct energy-sector experience is preferred, not required; comparable heavy civil, mass grading, and large-scale site development experience is valued.

  • Familiarity with Trimble, Topcon, or comparable GPS/GNSS machine-control systems. Trimble Business Center or similar software experience is beneficial but not required



Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities


  • Thorough knowledge of civil earthwork methods, equipment fleets, material handling, grading, drainage, and compaction; ability to apply Granite policies, procedures, and standards.

  • Ability to interpret civil plans, specifications, survey information, and work plans; identify constructability and sequencing issues and coordinate resolution with project management and technical personnel.

  • Ability to develop integrated field plans, balance resources across work areas, understand schedule dependencies, and lead recovery planning when production or milestones are at risk.

  • Ability to evaluate quantities, unit production and costs, equipment utilization, and remaining work; provide reliable field input for forecasts and resource decisions.

  • Practical knowledge of survey and GPS/GNSS grade-control workflows and the coordination needed to maintain consistent grade and quality across multiple operations.

  • Strong leadership, coaching, communication, negotiation, and problem-solving skills; ability to hold field leaders accountable and coordinate effectively with project stakeholders.

  • Proficiency with digital field reporting and document review; working knowledge of spreadsheets, schedules, and cost information sufficient to manage assigned field operations

The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and ability to adjust focus. Base Salary Range:

$100,791.00 - $158,746.00

Pay may vary based upon relevant experience, skills, location, and education among other factors. ​
