The Chassis Welder is responsible for performing structural and non-structural welding on ambulance chassis to support body mounting, suspension modifications, and upfit requirements. This role requires strong welding skills, attention to detail, and adherence to safety and quality standards critical to emergency vehicle performance.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform MIG and/or TIG welding on steel and aluminum chassis components
- Weld brackets, mounts, crossmembers, reinforcements, and suspension components
- Prepare materials by measuring, cutting, grinding, and fitting prior to welding
- Follow welding symbols, drawings, and work instructions
- Ensure weld quality meets strength, appearance, and safety standards
- Inspect welds for defects and perform rework as required
- Use proper fixturing and follow heat control procedures
- Maintain welding equipment and tools
- Adhere to all safety policies, PPE requirements, and 5S standards
- Collaborate with chassis prep, installers, and quality teams
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- 2+ years of welding experience in manufacturing or vehicle upfitting preferred
- Proficiency in MIG welding; TIG welding a plus
- Ability to read blueprints and welding symbols
- Strong attention to detail and workmanship
- Ability to lift up to 75 lbs and work in physically demanding positions
- Reliable attendance and strong safety awareness
Preferred Experience and Certifications
- Experience welding on vehicle chassis, frames, or structural components
- Experience in ambulance, fire apparatus, truck, or heavy equipment manufacturing
- AWS certification or ability to pass internal weld test
- Experience welding aluminum components
Work Environment
- Manufacturing and fabrication shop environment
- Exposure to welding fumes, sparks, noise, and heavy components
