JOB SUMMARY
The On-Highway Truck Driver is a vital member of the Paving Division team, responsible for the safe and efficient transportation of construction materials—specifically hot-mix asphalt (HMA), road base, and millings—to and from active paving sites. The On-Highway Truck Driver operates heavy-duty commercial vehicles (such as tractor-trailers, live-floor trailers, or end dumps) in a fast-paced environment. this position works primarily on public roadways and active construction zones, requiring a high level of situational awareness and strict adherence to Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations.
Beyond driving, the individual acts as a key collaborator with the paving crew, ensuring timely material delivery to keep the paving train moving and assisting with equipment transport and general site labor as needed.
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Safely transport asphalt, road base, and millings from plants to job sites, ensuring materials are delivered at the correct temperature and within specified timeframes.
- Crosstrain on lowboy trailers to load, secure, and transport heavy paving equipment (pavers, rollers, skid steers) between project locations.
- Coordinate with dispatch and the paving foreman to determine the most efficient and safest routes to maintain a continuous flow of material.
- Work closely with the paving crew to discharge materials into the paver hopper or windrow with precision.
- Perform and document mandatory Pre-Trip and Post-Trip inspections. Conduct routine preventive maintenance, including fueling, cleaning the truck (especially removing asphalt buildup), and checking fluid levels.
- Accurately manage and return all delivery tickets, weigh bills, and hours-of-service logs (ELD) in compliance with DOT and company policy.
- Maintain full compliance with FMCSA and DOT regulations, as well as Martin Marietta’s 'Guardian Angel' safety culture.
- Exercise expert judgment regarding site access, overhead obstructions (power lines), and ground stability when unloading or maneuvering on active construction zones.
- Ensure all loads (materials or equipment) are properly tarped and secured according to state and federal laws.
- When not behind the wheel, assist the paving crew with tasks such as shoveling, raking, or setting up traffic control devices (cones, signs) to ensure project completion.
- Maintain constant radio or hand-signal communication with the crew to facilitate safe movement and alignment of materials.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education
High school diploma, GED, or relevant experience
Class A CDL with Tanker and Air-brake endorsement
Work Experience
1+ years of CDL driving experience; experience specifically within the Asphalt/Paving industry is highly preferred.

Physical Requirements
Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. for plant maintenance and equipment servicing.
Required to bend, stoop, climb, and reach. You must be able to maintain three points of contact when climbing on/off machinery or on ladders.
Strong hand-eye-foot coordination is essential for operating hand/foot controls. You must have good depth perception with or without seeing aid for distances up to 150 feet.
Working Conditions
All duties require outside assignments and require periods of work in all weather conditions, cold, wet, dry and dusty. Must be able to work in areas where noise levels are up to 85 dbs.
The hiring range for this position is $26.50 -$30 exclusive of benefits or bonuses (discretionary and non-discretionary). The offered base compensation will be determined based on factors such as geographic location, business need, market conditions, proficiencies, skills, education, and experience. Additionally, at Martin Marietta we place a high value on internal pay equity and will consider the compensation for those in similarly situated roles and direct team members. The hiring range for this role represents the base compensation we expect to pay for the position at time of hire and does not represent the total possible base pay of the position.
