The Cataloging Librarian is responsible for the areas of cataloging, collection management, and preservation. The role plans, organizes, and coordinates activities to ensure library and information center resources are accessible to customers. Key duties include making cataloging and preservation recommendations, keeping collections updated and secure, and performing general research using online tools. Compiles and analyzes library statistics for USPTO reporting and working independently to meet project objectives, while keeping supervisors informed of progress and any unusual issues.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS
Must be able to obtain and maintain the required customer clearance for access to systems, facilities, equipment and property.
Possesses experience in original cataloging, special collection cataloging and knowledge in emerging cataloging trends in online cataloging systems.
Must be knowledgeable of current MARC/Conser/RDA standards, LC classification system, and cataloging support tools such as MarcEdit and Cataloger’s Desktop.
Possess experience in collection management and standard technical services practice.
Possesses experience with finding and searching scientific and technical information resources.
Possesses experience in Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Assists in cataloging, collection management, and preservation.
Plans, organizes, and coordinates work activities involved in obtaining and making library and information center resources available to customers.
Makes recommendations to the government for cataloging, collection management, or preservation decisions.
Ensures collections are updated and maintained (both physical and electronic collections) and makes recommendations accordingly.
Follows guidelines for the security of library collections and equipment.
Performs general research using on-line search techniques, automated tools, and other resources as necessary.
Compiles library statistics and analyzes data for the operation of the library or information center as required for USPTO wide reporting.
Works independently under overall project objectives and requirements.
Apprises supervisor about progress and unusual complications.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Master’s degree and a minimum of three (3) years of library/information center experience. Education requirement may be waived by five (5) years of progressively advanced practical experience in the field.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Work is primarily performed in an office environment. Regularly required to sit. Regularly required use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms to handle objects and operate tools, computer, and/or controls. Required to speak and hear. Occasionally required to stand, walk and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Exposed to general office noise with computers printers and light traffic.
