Business Development Director

The Ultra Sales & Marketing function is responsible for growth of both the business development opportunity pipeline and the closure of sales by negotiating the terms and conditions in contracts. Through good business development practices and strong, senior-level customer interaction this function will deliver the defined business opportunities and develop a marketing strategy that demonstrates achievable levels of profitable growth in line with the overall business plan. This function is instrumental in setting the strategy for the business for all aspects of marketing and sales.

The Director of Business Development at Ultra Specialized Radio Frequency is a high impact position and a critical role as a member of a high performing, cross-functional leadership team. The successful candidate will have business development, sales forecasting, and customer relationship responsibilities for one of our key sites which specializes in unmanned flight safety and related products along with new capability development that address our customer’s emerging requirements. This position supports our Lancaster, PA facilities, but will collaborate across multiple Ultra Electronics business units.

While being located near the facilities is desirable, a remote or hybrid work environment is possible for the ideal candidate. Working closely with Ultra-Herley engineering, operations, program management and the rest of the business development and sales team, this position leads strategic planning, forecasting, marketing and new business development for these critical technologies. As a champion of the Lancaster product lines, the successful candidate would also be expected to leverage and build new relationships with engineers, procurement personnel, program managers, consultants and senior management personnel within the US Government and major prime customer base.

Required Skills and Attributes:

  • Enthusiasm for Business Development, Sales, Growth and delivering value to customers.

  • Work closely with the General Manager, VP for BD, CFO and business area President to develop, communicate and implement new business strategies.

  • Mentor business development and sales team.

  • Identify, qualify and shape new opportunities and lead the development and implementation of capture plans to win them. Present opportunities with business case to Senior Management as part of Ultra capture process.

  • Work closely with key accounts and new customers, utilizing engineering and program resources to develop and shape requirements for future programs.

  • Travel as required to grow and maintain relationships with customers and advocates.

  • Lead and mentor capture and proposal teams associated with high value new program pursuits, including win/price strategy and capture execution, proposal management when required, and ensure compliant, competitive, and compelling offers are submitted.

  • Drive the forecasts process and champion the use of Customer Relationship Management tools to evaluate pipeline health and resource allocation for year-on-year growth across key financial metrics.

  • Interface with key consultants, representatives and re-sellers to ensure business objectives are met.

  • Key contributor to the development and execution of the long-term strategic plan.

  • Key contributor to the development and maintenance of short- and long-term technology and investment roadmaps to support business financial commitments.

  • Collaborate across functions to identify and utilize to maximum benefit key conferences and supplier summits.

  • Adhere to and champion the Ultra Electronics Code of Conduct and Business Ethics Standards.

  • 4 year college/university degree (technical field preferred), or equivalent experience

  • 12 years of experience in Defense Industry positions such as Active Duty, Engineering, Program Management, Business Develop or Capture Management

  • Have a Secret Clearance or the ability to obtain a US Government Secret security clearance. Security clearances are granted to U.S. citizens.

Desired Skills/Attributes:

  • 18 years of experience in Defense Industry with roles such as but not limited to Active Duty, Engineering, Program Management, Business Develop or Capture Management.

  • 5 or more years of Business Development/Sales Leadership

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills including presentation material and briefs to senior executives

  • Ability to analyze data sets and draw conclusions that drive strategy

  • Leadership of small, impactful teams

  • Willing to travel up to 50% of the time or as required to achieve business objectives

  • Experience with microwave and radio frequency products and the systems that these products support (electronic warfare, radar, communications, and test), including new technologies addressing advanced threats and SWAP-C.
