Description

Summary /Objective

The Safety Coordinator plays a crucial role in maintaining the plant’s safety programs and enhancing overall safety awareness among the workers. This position supports the safety department by screening and entering training data, managing safety records, conducting new hire safety orientations, and administering safety programs. Additionally, the Safety Coordinator is responsible for maintaining personnel safety training files within the Safety Management System. Furthermore, this role involves helping to develop and coordinate training programs aimed at enhancing workforce safety awareness, including monthly safety training sessions and guidance on selecting personal protective equipment for new hires.

 

Essential Function

  • Reliable and regular attendance.
  • Developing and implementing environmental, safety, and health programs/policies in compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, as well as company policies. This includes initiatives related to air, water, waste, and OSHA regulations in both general industry and construction safety.
  • Assisting in the facilitation of safety-related training for all levels of staff and coaching supervisors to continually improve employee safety training.
  • Supporting the plant leadership team in building and reinforcing a safety culture aimed at achieving zero incidents or injuries.
  • Participating in facility safety audits and inspections and contributing to plant-wide process improvement projects.
  • Maintaining accurate and up-to-date document control and record-keeping both within and outside the Safety Management System (SMS), including compliance documentation, safety procedures, work instructions, environmental records, and accident/injury reports.
  • Assisting with the preparation, updating, and appropriate retention or disposal of safety and compliance documents across all systems.
  • Working flexible schedules as needed to support safety initiatives and training requirements.
  • Manage and ensure the completion of onboarding, ongoing compliance training, and safety training.
  • Maintain and report on safety surveys, observations, and inspections.
  • Assist supervisors and managers with the investigation of accidents and incidents, ensuring that all reported cases are thoroughly investigated and that prompt corrective actions are taken and documented.
  • Serve as a contact for work-related accidents, which may include basic First Aid.
  • Participate in safety committees, inspections, observations, and investigations of accidents and incidents.
  • Stay updated on safety policies and regulations to serve as a resource for supervisors and managers on safety improvements and strategies.
  • Interpret safety regulations for individuals interested in industrial safety, including safety inspectors.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Senior Safety Manager.

Qualifications


Required Experience

  • 1 to 2 years of experience in a role responsible for safety programs is required.
  • 1 to 2 years or more of experience in environmental, health, and safety within a manufacturing environment is necessary.
  • Professional knowledge of federal standards, including OSHA, EPA, and DOT, relevant to the manufacturing sector is essential.
  • Strong computer skills are required, including proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
  • Excellent telephone and interpersonal skills are necessary.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills are required.

Additional Education and Experience

  • Certification in CHMM, REP, CSP, or CIH is a plus.
  • Lean Manufacturing or Six Sigma expertise is strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of local, state, and federal safety regulations is required.
  • Strong presentation skills, along with prior experience in training, are essential.
  • Strong relationship-building skills across all levels of the organization are essential.
  • Ability to manage conflict and maintain composure in challenging situations.
  • Proven capability to collaborate with other departments to enhance and promote a safety culture.
  • Highly organized, with the ability to multitask and adapt to ambiguity or changing priorities.
  • Ability to self-manage and take initiative on projects, with minimal supervision.
  • Strong judgment and problem-solving skills.
  • Capable of analyzing processes and creating effective training documentation.

Physical Demands

  • Responsibilities include standing, walking, bending, and stooping for extended periods. The role also requires gripping, grasping, twisting, reaching overhead, climbing stairs, and lifting or carrying weights of up to 75 pounds. Proficiency in using hand tools, power tools, and other industrial equipment is necessary. Candidates must be able to work in a manufacturing environment with extreme heat conditions, reaching up to 120 degrees Fahrenheit, and be willing to wear the required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
