Job Description: Base A Technician (Combo Fitter/Welder)

Overview: A skilled Base A Technician is a higher skilled Combo Fitter/Welder at Lyon Shipyard. The successful candidate will be responsible for fitting, joining, and welding metal structures using a wide range of welding processes. This role requires a high level of expertise in welding techniques, adherence to tight tolerances, and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Responsibilities:

  • Read and interpret drafting designs or plans to determine the best way to join or fuse metal parts.
  • Prepare metal surfaces for welding by cleaning and positioning them correctly.
  • Select appropriate welding torches, nozzles, or electrodes for specific jobs.
  • Set up and operate welding equipment, including larger mechanized welding machines.
  • Perform welding using various processes such as MIG, TIG, and stick welding.
  • Ensure welds meet quality and safety standards by performing visual inspections on fitment and welds.
  • Adhere to welding codes, symbols, and specifications.
  • Operate forklifts and overhead cranes to move and position materials.
  • Maintain a safe and organized work environment.
  • Collaborate with other team members and departments to complete projects efficiently.
  • Report any equipment malfunctions or safety concerns to the supervisor.

Requirements:

  • Proven experience as a Combo Fitter/Welder, with a strong background in fitting and welding metal structures.
  • Proficiency in various welding processes (MIG, TIG, stick welding).
  • Ability to read and interpret drafting designs and welding symbols.
  • Strong understanding of welding codes and specifications.
  • Ability to work independently with little or no supervision.
  • Experience with forklifts and overhead cranes.
  • Attention to detail and ability to adhere to tight tolerances in fabrication.
  • Strong visual inspection skills to ensure quality and safety of welds.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to troubleshoot welding issues.
  • Good communication and teamwork skills.
  • Physical stamina and ability to work in various weather conditions.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with shipyard operations and safety protocols.
  • Additional training in advanced welding techniques or equipment.
