Automation Technician

Position Summary

We are seeking a skilled Automation Technician to join our team and support the installation, commissioning, troubleshooting, programming, and maintenance of automated equipment and industrial control systems.

The ideal candidate has hands-on experience with robot programming, PLC programming, or advanced automation troubleshooting, along with strong electrical, mechanical, and preventative maintenance skills. Candidates who may not have extensive programming experience but demonstrate strong troubleshooting ability and a solid maintenance background are encouraged to apply.

This position is well suited for a hands-on technician who enjoys solving complex problems, working with industrial automation, and keeping equipment operating safely and reliably.

Key Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair automated machinery and industrial equipment.
  • Perform electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, and controls troubleshooting.
  • Program, modify, and troubleshoot PLCs, HMIs, robots, and other automation controls when qualified.
  • Support robot setup, programming, calibration, and recovery.
  • Read and interpret electrical schematics, control drawings, mechanical drawings, and equipment documentation.
  • Identify root causes of equipment failures and implement effective corrective actions.
  • Perform preventative and predictive maintenance on automated equipment.
  • Install, wire, configure, and commission automation equipment and control systems.
  • Assist with machine startups, commissioning, and production launches.
  • Use electrical test equipment and diagnostic tools to troubleshoot control systems.
  • Support machine modifications, upgrades, and continuous improvement projects.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of repairs, modifications, programs, and troubleshooting activities.
  • Work closely with engineers, programmers, customers, and other technicians to resolve equipment issues.
  • Follow all company and customer safety procedures and maintain a clean, organized work environment.
  • Travel to customer facilities as required for installation, service, troubleshooting, and commissioning.

Required Qualifications

  • Hands-on experience working with industrial automation, machinery, controls, or maintenance.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong mechanical and electrical maintenance skills.
  • Ability to read and understand electrical schematics and control diagrams.
  • Experience with industrial sensors, motors, drives, relays, contactors, safety circuits, and pneumatic systems.
  • Ability to diagnose equipment problems using a logical, systematic approach.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Strong communication and documentation skills.
  • Willingness to travel and work at customer sites when required.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with one or more of the following is highly desirable:

  • PLC programming and troubleshooting — Allen-Bradley/Rockwell, Siemens, Mitsubishi, Omron, or similar.
  • Industrial robot programming and troubleshooting — FANUC, ABB, Yaskawa/Motoman, Kawasaki, or similar.
  • HMI programming and troubleshooting.
  • Variable frequency drives and servo systems.
  • Industrial Ethernet and controls networking.
  • Machine vision systems.
  • Safety PLCs and machine safety systems.
  • Electrical panel construction and wiring.
  • Pneumatic and hydraulic systems.
  • Preventative and predictive maintenance programs.
  • Automated assembly, material handling, welding, packaging, or manufacturing equipment.
  • Machine commissioning and startup.

What We Are Looking For

The strongest candidate does not necessarily need to be an expert programmer. We are looking for someone who can figure things out.

If you have experience programming robots or PLCs, that is a significant advantage. If your background is primarily in industrial maintenance but you have strong electrical/controls troubleshooting skills and the ability to learn automation systems, we want to hear from you.

A successful Automation Technician will be:

  • Hands-on and mechanically inclined
  • Strong at electrical and controls troubleshooting
  • Comfortable working around automated machinery
  • Safety-focused
  • Analytical and persistent when diagnosing problems
  • Able to learn new technologies quickly
  • Comfortable working directly with customers and production personnel

Physical & Work Requirements

  • Ability to work around industrial machinery and manufacturing environments.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb, and work in various positions as required.
  • Ability to safely use hand tools, electrical test equipment, and maintenance equipment.
  • Ability to lift and handle equipment and components within reasonable job requirements.
  • Ability to travel to customer locations as needed.

Why Join Us?

This is an opportunity to work on real-world industrial automation projects and develop your skills across robotics, PLCs, controls, electrical systems, and machine maintenance. We value technicians who can troubleshoot problems, take ownership of their work, and continuously expand their technical capabilities.

If you are a strong industrial maintenance technician, controls technician, robot programmer, PLC programmer, or automation technician who enjoys solving problems and working with your hands, we want to talk with you.
