Position Summary:

 

ISS is seeking an experienced and highly skilled Automation Project Engineer III to design, program, and implement advanced automation and control systems. 

This role involves collaborating closely with customers and a multi-disciplinary engineering team to deliver comprehensive technical solutions that meet specifications, budgets, and timelines. 

The Automation Project Engineer will lead projects from initial concept through commissioning and startup, provide hands-on field support, manage project teams, and build strong client relationships while ensuring the highest standards of quality and safety. 

This position reports to the ISS-Vice President of Technology.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead automation projects from concept through commissioning and startup, ensuring delivery within scope, budget, and schedule
  • Evaluate job sites, assess customer requirements, and define project scope
  • Develop detailed technical and commercial proposals for automation systems
  • Oversee and mentor team of engineers and technicians to execute project deliverables
  • Identify, document, and manage scope changes throughout the project lifecycle
  • Coordinate with project management, sales, and operations teams to ensure seamless project execution
  • Specify, design, program, integrate, and implement industrial automation systems including DCS, PLC, HMI, and SCADA platforms
  • Develop control system architectures, I/O lists, and communication network designs
  • Create, read, interpret, and translate P&IDs and electrical drawings into functional control logic and sequences
  • Design and implement advanced process control strategies, alarming philosophies, and operator interfaces
  • Program PLCs using ladder logic, function block diagrams, structured text, and sequential function charts
  • Configure and program HMI/SCADA systems with intuitive graphics, trending, alarming, and reporting capabilities
  • Develop comprehensive project documentation including functional design specifications (FDS), control narratives, and sequence of operations
  • Create and review technical documentation, vendor drawings, and ensure compliance with project specifications and industry standards
  • Develop and maintain automation standards, templates, and best practices for consistent project delivery
  • Prepare equipment specifications, material requisitions, and Bills of Materials (BOMs)
  • Author Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) and Site Acceptance Test (SAT) protocols and procedures
  • Perform site visits to support commissioning, startup, and troubleshooting activities
  • Conduct loop checks, I/O verification, and functional testing of control systems
  • Provide hands-on troubleshooting for both electrical hardware and control logic issues
  • Support Factory Acceptance Tests (FATs) and Site Acceptance Tests (SATs)
  • Develop and deliver training to operations and maintenance personnel on automation systems
  • Travel domestically and internationally as needed to support field service activities
  • Maintain effective communication with customers, vendors, and internal teams throughout project lifecycles
  • Serve as technical liaison between customers and internal engineering teams
  • Interface with equipment vendors for technical support, product selection, and system integration
  • Participate in customer meetings, design reviews, and project status reviews
  • Build and maintain strong client relationships through responsive, professional service
  • Stay current with advancements in automation technologies, platforms, and industry trends
  • Identify opportunities for design optimization, standardization, and cost reduction
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives in automation practices and methodologies
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and recommend adoption strategies
  • Contribute to the development of company automation capabilities and service offerings

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering (Control Systems, Mechatronics, or related field) required 
  • Master's Degree in Engineering or Professional Engineer (PE) license (preferred)
  • Automation system certifications (e.g., Rockwell TechConnect, Siemens SSCEP, Emerson DeltaV certification) are highly advantageous 
  • ISA Certified Automation Professional (CAP) or similar credentials (preferred) 
  • Functional Safety certifications (TÜV, IEC 61511, ISA 84) are a plus
  • 4-7 years of progressive experience in automation and controls projects, including commissioning and startup 
  • Proven track record of successfully leading automation projects from design through implementation 
  • Demonstrated experience across multiple automation platforms and industrial sectors 
  • Background in industries such as oil and gas, petrochemical, water/wastewater, power generation, mining, food and beverage, or recycling 
  • Experience managing technical teams and coordinating with multi-disciplinary engineering groups
