JOB SUMMARY: The Automation Engineer is responsible for supporting/leading the design, debug, and installation of automated systems for production and new product development activities. The Automation Engineer is also responsible for researching, recommending, and implementing automated means to collect critical assembly and functional data to support production analytics. Supports development of specifications and validation of equipment. Support/lead continuous improvement for existing manufacturing lines.
POSITION TITLE: Automation Engineer (1 to III)
SHIFT HOURS: 8:00am to 5:00pm (days)
LOCATION: Onsite at LSI Solutions in Victor, NY
SALARY PAY RANGE: $88,000 to $115,000
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Automation Engineer I
- Document machine requirements with internal customers.
- Assist in the development of automation & line layout diagrams with Manufacturing Engineers.
- Assist with debug of existing production equipment.
- Application of lean manufacturing principles.
- Support the development of work instructions, equipment operating procedures, calibrations, etc.
Automation Engineer II
- All essential functions listed above.
- Develop Machine Specifications after gathering input from internal customers.
- Assist development of mechanical drawings and Bill of Materials for fabrication & purchased equipment.
- Assist in document control for LSI and integrator drawing packages for automated equipment.
- Participate in development of new test systems for new & existing Product Development.
- Clearly define timelines, deliverables, and contingency plans as appropriate.
- Work with 3rd party integrators to develop equipment.
- Supports Corrective and Preventive Actions (CAPA) processes and root cause investigations.
- Develop improvements to existing production automated machinery.
Automation Engineer III

- Lead interactions with third party automation & engineering vendors.
- Support the creation and revision of drawings required for projects.
- Review mechanical design basics, PLC functionality and human/machine interface (HMI) software.
- Process project documentation through the official LSI document control system.
- Manage project deliverables, timelines, and risks.
Senior Automation Engineer

- Provide functional expertise, leadership, and mentorship to the Automation team members.
- Understand and communicate regulatory implications related to the Automation functions.
- Advanced knowledge of and experience in applying engineering principles, analytical techniques, and judgement to independently resolve major technical issues.
- Lead Automation Project from initiation to completion with all business partners.
- Represent Engineering during internal & external audits.
Principal Automation Engineer

- Lead full Automation Project with all business partners from Business Case to Completion.
- Strong understanding of LSI product line(s) that interact with Automation.
- Represent Engineering with LSI Leadership during strategic planning.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
- BS Engineering or technical discipline required.
- Knowledge of medical device technologies preferred.
- Knowledge of clean room practices preferred.
Automation Engineer Level I
- Entry level relevant work experience.
Automation Engineer Level II
- 3+ years of relevant work experience.
- Knowledge of best practices for high & low volume manufacturing equipment.
Automation Engineer Level III
- 5+ years of relevant work experience.
- 3+ years of relevant engineering experience in medical device or other regulated industry.
- Experience developing high & low volume manufacturing equipment.
Senior Automation Engineer
- 8+ years of relevant work experience.
- 5+ years of relevant engineering experience in medical device or other regulated industry.
- Experience leading high & low volume manufacturing equipment development.
Principal Automation Engineer
- 12+ years of relevant work experience.
- 10+ years of relevant engineering experience in medical device or other regulated industry.
- Led high & low volume manufacturing equipment development / procurement.
- Demonstrated example of subject matter expert in a specific technology.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
Automation Engineer Level I
- Participated in automation implementation projects.
- Participated in writing technical documentation.
- Familiar with 2D AutoCAD for mechanical or controls design, SolidWorks and/or Inventor 3D design.
- Knowledge of statistics for production/manufacturing monitoring.
- Understand lean manufacturing principles.
- Familiar with creating project plans to ensure project milestones are met (timeline, quality, and budget).
- Proficient in Microsoft Excel and Word.
- Effective verbal & written communication skills.
Automation Engineer Level II
- All above-listed Knowledge, Skills & Abilities.
- Experience leading small automation projects/teams and with project management tools.
- Experience in writing technical documentation.
- Experience with 2D AutoCAD for mechanical or controls design.
- Experience with SolidWorks and/or Inventor 3D design.
- Familiar with PLC and HMI software (Allen Bradley/Rockwell), vision inspection systems (Cognex, Keyence) and robotics.
- Experienced with production statistics for manufacturing monitoring.
- Experienced in problem solving techniques.
- Familiar with Process Excellence tools – ex. FMEA, Cause & Effect, DOEs, etc.
Automation Engineer Level III
- All above-listed Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Experience in leading large automation projects.
- Authored technical documentation & reports.
- Led problem solving events with use of Process Excellence – ex. FMEA, Cause & Effect, DOEs, etc.
- Demonstrated use of Project Management Skills for large projects.

Senior Automation Engineer
