Description

The Automation / Controls Technician is responsible for the design, installation, testing, troubleshooting, and maintenance of the automated equipment and control systems in the Honeyville-Ogden manufacturing facility. This position works closely with the Maintenance and Operations Teams, Corporate Engineer / Leadership and Manufacturing Personnel to ensure that operational equipment / systems perform efficiently, reliably, and optimally. Continuous Improvement mindset and focus is desired. This position is based in Ogden, UT but will require some travel to CA.

 

Core Responsibilities:

  • Design, implement, maintain, and upgrade automated equipment and control systems using PLCs, HMIs, and other hardware and software tools.  
  • Oversee automation/controls system installation / upgrade projects, controlling scope, cost, and schedule.
  • Perform testing and troubleshooting of automated systems to ensure proper function and performance.
  • Integrate entire line controls to optimize operations of the equipment. Develop and optimize real-time data usage for proper operations adjustments, technical troubleshooting, and reporting.
  • Provide technical support to manufacturing personnel in the operation and maintenance of automated equipment. 
  • Develop and maintain documentation/programs/backups for automated systems, including schematics, manuals, and procedures.  Prepare and maintain preventive maintenance and spare parts documentation.
  • Stay current with advances in automation technology and continuously improve processes and systems.
  • Collaborate with other engineers and technicians to identify and resolve issues with production equipment.
  • Develop and conduct training for other technical resources in the plant.  Be a resource to advance technical skills in electrical/electronic/electro-mechanical/pneumatic and other control systems.

Qualifications

  • Proficiency in programming, troubleshooting, repairing, and operating PLCs and HMIs. Experience with Allen-Bradley hardware/software is required.
  • Strong understanding of automation systems, components, and programming languages.
  • Experience with industrial control systems (SCADA, DCS), servo motors, vision systems, RF, linear motion, vacuum, process water cooling, hydraulics, pneumatics, remote handling, interlock sensors, and system integration.
  • Excellent critical thinking skills, problem-solving, and keen attention to detail.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team environment.

 

Education Requirements:

  • Associate’s degree or higher preferred and/or certifications from a technical school.

 

Physical Demands & Work Environment:

Frequently required to stand; walk; use of hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop; kneel; crouch or crawl; and to talk; or hear. Ability to lift and/ or move more than fifty pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color, and depth vision. Frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, risk of electrical shock or vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to occasionally loud. Exposure to allergens such as Soy, Wheat, Tree Nuts, Milk/Dairy, eggs etc.
