Automated Grinder Operator - 2nd shift

Position Overview:

The primary responsibility of this position is to grind castings utilizing an automated grinding machine and hand tools according to specifications and quality standards. The individual must be able to work under minimal supervision. Responsibilities cited below are considered essential job functions:

Principal Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Adhere to established safety procedures and 5 “ S ” standards (Sort, Set in order, Shine, Standardize and Sustain the cycle) required to perform daily duties in this position, including the proper techniques used in lifting/moving of parts
  • Grind castings utilizing the automated grinding machine:

a. Inspect castings per written instructions to ensure that no defects exist

b. Inspect grinding to ensure that part has been properly ground as per the part process sheet

c. Use various hand tools to assist in grinding, deburring, or inspection

d. Activate a hand switch (push button) to start the grinding cycle

e. Using an air gun, blows loose debris out of the casting

f. Set up fixturing and enter proper part program in automated grinding machine

  • Change fixtures and grinding wheels as needed on the grinding machine
  • Move tooling and parts in and out of the grinding area by utilizing a hand-jack, PIT, or by lifting/moving by hand
  • Troubleshoot problems with machinery and report findings to the supervisor
  • Clean the automated grinding machine at the end of the shift
  • Promptly notify the supervisor of any problem related to the operation of the automated grinding machine, process sheets or inspections
  • Strictly observe safety rules and procedures, utilize machine guards as required
  • Grind castings utilizing a snag grinder, chipper gun, or hand grinder as needed
  • Other duties as assigned; required being very flexible in their daily job assignments

Skills/Qualifications:

  • Communication skills, ability to read, write and comprehend instruction
  • Ability to stand, stoop, bend, walk, reach frequently throughout the workday
  • Ability to lift items up to 40lbs without assistance
  • Manual dexterity
  • Mechanical aptitude
  • Knowledge of shop mathematics, i.e. decimals and fractions
  • Ability to operate a powered industrial truck and hand-jack
  • Basic computer skills

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:

General shop and machine tool noise, dirt, sand, grease, extreme heat, high temperatures and fumes from the operation of machines and equipment. Normal working position is standing or walking through out the plant. Some repetitive lifting/moving is required, depending on the daily assignment or tasks being performed. Physical ability to wear respirator and safety equipment required. The weight can range anywhere from 1 to 200 lbs in which proper lifting/moving techniques are required. Parts above 40 lbs require using a hoist.

Standard Shift Hours:

Mon - Fri: 2pm - 10pm (core hours) + overtime
