Asst Manager-Tax

Honda Aircraft Co. • Torrance, CA

"Total quality mindset" and effective "corporate social responsibility" are two key corporate goals of AHM. This job contributes to these goals by enabling the Tax Department to accurately report and pay its income tax liabilities to various income tax authorities and also to accurately report on income taxes in its financial statements for the benefit of internal and external stakeholders. This position enables AHM to meet its legal and regulatory requirements in order to be a "company that society wants to exist." This role is responsible for in-sourcing tax technical expertise (thus resulting in lower law and accounting firm fees), especially in the areas of method changes, inventory, fixed assets, and cost segregation, supervising the preparation of timely and complete quarterly and year-end income tax provisions in compliance with IAS 12, FAS 109 and SOX Sec. 404, and the preparation of complete and accurate federal and state income tax returns / work papers for AHM and its subsidiaries by internal due dates. This position requires significant tax provision and compliance technical subject matter expertise, extensive experience in identifying and resolving complex issues, and superior tax quantitative and reporting skills. The rationale for this position is that it can simultaneously: (a) reduce outside provider fees by in-sourcing areas that require tax technical expertise in areas where AHM pays significant fees; and (b) support finance, insurance, and e-side entities where significant retirements and attrition has occurred among Tax leadership.

Responsibilities:

  • Maintaining a working knowledge of federal and state tax reform provisions and tax law changes affecting AHM and its subsidiaries/affiliates and overseeing incorporation of such changes in the tax calculations
  • Strong knowledge of IRS guidance on changes in methods of accounting, including applications to change from an impermissible method to a permissible method, from one permissible method to another, method change vs error correction and associated consequences, disclosures and mitigation, appropriate character and effect on timing, such as capital vs ordinary.
  • Fixed asset tax technical subject matter expert responsible for identifying, addressing, and resolving issues related to: TPR; rotables; QIP
  • Cost segregation tax technical subject matter expert responsible for providing analysis and completing studies
  • Inventory tax technical subject matter expert responsible for 263A calculations, LIFO, non-LIFO, and GPE calculations
  • Tax technical subject matter expert responsible for capital versus ordinary deduction, sales apportionment, UNICAP calculations, 163(j) interest expense limitation, and advising on tax settlement allocations
  • Responding to external auditor inquiries and prepare analyses to justify not accounting for or disclosing items/adjustments noted as immaterial
  • Supervising assigned entities that are issuing financial statements under GAAP and are therefore subject to a more stringent KPMG audit scrutiny (particularly AHFC, which has SEC reporting obligations)
  • Interacting with KPMG auditors in responding to their questions regarding the tax provision calculations, and review responses to Honda Motor tax provision inquiries
  • Participate in the SOX walk-through with external and internal auditors
