Job Overview:

HYBRID work arrangement - This role is considered a flexible hybrid work arrangement position (eg an average of 1-2 day per week in the office over a month) that is within a commutable driving distance to Summit, NJ.

The Opportunity

The Associate General Counsel has accountability for Seqirus’s largest single market (U.S.) as well as Canada and Argentina, and for multiple Global Functions. The AGC is directly responsible for leading, managing and directing the work of others in providing legal support to all aspects of the Seqirus Americas business (inclusive of Commercial, Manufacturing, Pandemic Franchise, Medical and Corporate Governance). The AGC also provides first-line support and leads others in supporting multiple Global Functions including: Global Commercial Development, Franchise Strategy and Market Access, Global Marketing and Claims Development, Global Medical Affairs and Global Social Media/Communications.

The Role

Assist in the Management of Seqirus Global Legal:

  • Responsible for assisting the Seqirus General Counsel in managing the Seqirus Global Legal Function

Lead the Team and Set Strategy to Support Business Objectives:

  • Lead, direct, and control legal activities of two Americas Legal Partners, a Paralegal and, indirectly the Legal Services team members for Seqirus, to protect and advance business operations for the areas of accountability
  • Develop strategies and lead, manage and provide strategic direction to the Legal Partners, on initiatives specific to the Americas Market, or to the Global Commercial Development and Global Medical Functions where such direction requires more focus, attention and guidance than can be provided by the General Counsel (the manager of this role) to achieve key business objectives
  • Ensure and communicate a dedicated support model for the Legal Partners to the clients/customers .

Ensure Consistent and Aligned Approach:

  • Streamline and ensure consistency of Legal Partner services in the areas of accountability
  • Align such services with Seqirus General Counsel and the Legal Partner Heads in other regions to ensure a globally consistent service offering for the clients/customers
  • Supervise and direct Legal Partners in carrying out legal services

Manage Legal Risks:

  • Provide counsel and advice to senior management to protect the organization from legal action or to pursue legal action
  • Proactively manage legal risks and identify legal support opportunities for the business by staying abreast of statutory and regulatory developments and enforcement and litigation trends, and provide corresponding guidance to business leadership

Supervise Litigation:

  • Supervise and/or manage significant litigation matters, and litigation exposure that could have a significant impact (tens to hundreds of millions of dollars) and protect the interests of the organization

Ensure Effective and Efficient Delivery of Legal Support:

  • Develop strategies and set direction that ensures effective and efficient legal support for the areas of accountability, where such support relates to the Americas Market, or to the Global Commercial Development and Global Medical Functions, it requires specific solutions suited to those markets and functions, including through the establishment of strong collaborative relationships with Regional/Functional Leaders
  • Ensure effective and efficient delivery of legal support by:
    • supervising the Legal Partners team who support the areas of accountability,
    • reviewing, drafting and negotiating significant contracts or advising on strategic inquiries from the business,
    • engaging and managing external counsel, including strategy as to external counsel retention (engagement, RFP, etc.), and developing training plans for legal matters for the Legal Partners and the business

Build Relationships with Business Leaders:

  • Build and maintain strong working relationship with business leaders the areas of accountability and across the business

Approve and Management Budget:

  • Oversee and approve legal budgets of approximately for the Americas, as well as for certain Global projects and forecasts in close coordination with Seqirus General Counsel and CSL Legal Operations
  • Serve as regional liaison with Legal Services and Operations and Ethics & Compliance and Risk

Contribute to Culture and Collaborate with the Business:

  • Contribute to the overall culture of the organization, including collaborative relationships with other business functions and customer groups

Set Strategy for Growth and Develop Team:

  • Set strategy for growth and professional development of the team members
  • Ensure an environment that provides opportunities for development and growth for Legal Partners and other Global Legal department team members

Your skills and experience

  • Bachelor degree and J.D. or equivalent foreign degree
  • Bar admission in relevant region or permission to practice in-house
  • 12+ years’ international corporate or law firm legal experience
  • 7 years' experience in the pharmaceutical, biotech or medical device
  • 5 years' International experience for multi-jurisdiction region
  • 3 years' Experience managing a legal department
  • Strong negotiating and drafting skills
  • Strong strategic thinking and leadership skills
  • Strong communication and stakeholder influencing skills
  • Strong business acumen and judgment
  • Strong collaborative and solutions-focused approach
