Aerojet Rocketdyne seeks an Associate Mechanical Design Engineer to join our engineering design team in our Canoga Park, CA location.


This entry-level position requires mechanical design skills that will be applied in designing system components and integrating engine level assembly hardware issues to include vehicle-engine integration for large liquid rocket engines.


Working under the guidance of senior staff, the candidate will develop and complete system component designs and actively participate in the integration of these items with engine component product teams to ensure that the hardware designs meet the customers’ requirements.

Essential Job Functions (Including % of Time for Each)

Under direct supervision, the selected candidate will perform mechanical design engineering assignments requiring application of engineering principles, theories and concepts to develop propulsion system components hardware and associated test support equipment for spacecraft and missile programs.


50% - Perform design tasks that contribute to the development of system components that help optimize the overall vehicle-engine system configuration to meet customers’ performance and cost objectives.  Actively coordinate these system component designs with other component product teams throughout the engine system to ensure interface requirements are met.


Create engineering 3D CAD models per company defined standards. Ability to interpret Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing per ASME Y14.5-1994/2009 and perform tolerance stackups as required. Evaluate technical input from hardware suppliers and work with a cross functional team on producibility improvements and cost savings. Candidate will participate in trade studies and preliminary design using 3D CAD models.


20% - Performs initial structural analysis of designs to validate system component sizing based on static loads. Interacts with Structural Analysis, Materials Processing Engineering, Manufacturing and Quality to ensure hardware meets operating environment requirements, is producible and inspectable within budgeted cost.


20% - Prepares engineering drawings with associated geometric dimensioning and tolerancing in accordance with ASME Y14.5 standards. Actively participates in team meetings to ensure design content for new or modified engineering designs. Prepares CAD files for team approval and configuration management release.


10% - Prepares design presentations for internal and external customers. Responsible for preparing engineering reports to support tolerance studies, engineering analyses, or failure investigations, including technical close-out reports.


Requires a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or an appropriate related technical discipline.


Additional Requirements:

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel and PowerPoint).
  • General understanding of manufacturing processes (welding, brazing, machining, heat treating).
  • Strong mechanical engineering background with knowledge and understanding of mechanical systems.

Preferred Qualifications:  

  • Working knowledge of CREO 3D geometry-based modeling.
  • Experience in the design and development of mechanical systems and working knowledge of ANSI Y14.5.
  • Previous aerospace engines or propulsion systems knowledge/experience is beneficial.
  • General component and system level knowledge of rocket propulsion hardware.
