The Site Environment, Occ Health, Safety and Sustainability (EOHSS) Associate Director, Environmental will be a critical member of the BMS Lawrenceville Site EOHSS Department. This team member will be the Subject Matter Expert (SME) for Environmental matters for the site and shall also have the ability and knowledge to support general site EOHSS matter when they arise. The Associate Director will coordinate, implement, assess, and improve environmental, outcomes for the site. The Associate Director will be knowledgeable with local regulations and consensus guides and become knowledgeable with BMS management systems, policies and procedures, to promote compliant, forward-leaning environmental culture and preserve BMS’ reputation while driving shared Company objectives.

  • Provides support for broader EOHSS programs when needed

Duties/ Responsibilities:

  • Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local environmental and sustainability laws, regulations, codes, rules, and consensus guides.
  • Must have the skills necessary to gain a thorough understanding of the R&ED business operations which are conducted at the site, with sufficient detail to provide applicable environmental regulatory and technical practical guidance.
  • Accountable for site environmental regulatory preparedness for assigned specialties and builds rapport and trust through all regulatory authority interactions.
  • Supports the Site EOHSS Lead to ensure continuous improvement of site environmental and sustainability culture; models what good looks like.
  • Participates in site design reviews, change control, technical transfer, shutdown and pre-start up safety reviews, as required.
  • Support the Site EOHSS lead with engineering and R&ED Departments to ensure rigorous implementation of global EOHSS and engineering requirements.
  • Contributes to site EOHSS Committees from an Environment and Sustainability perspective, and site self-assessment program evaluations.
  • Stops operations and activities that could harm the environment, workforce, or facilities.
  • Contributes to identifying opportunities to eliminate unplanned events including spills (as SME), workplace injuries, accidents, and adverse health effects.
  • Contributes to EOHSS-related incident investigations using approved tools and techniques and leads investigations with environmental aspects.
  • Reviews EOHSS training and recommends revisions, improvements, and updates.
  • Reviews and ensures accurate and complete resolution of issues as they arise, inclusive of completion of required recordkeeping and reporting at national, state, province level as well as within BMS stipulated structures and timing.
  • Contributes to ensuring robust safety, health, and environmental program for site vendors, contractors and consultants.
  • Proactively collaborates at site and above-site levels.
  • Conducts proactive environmental/sustainability regulatory surveillance; updates strategy, systems and programs resulting from such shifts.
  • Contributes to the site emergency response, preparedness and business continuity programs.
  • Works with others at the site to cultivate a strong environmental, safety, occupational health and sustainability culture.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Extensive knowledge of current Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requirements and knowledge of Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
  • Must be completely facile in all matters of environmental programs (air, water, remediation, waste, sustainability).
  • Must understand authoring and approval principles for regulatory and site operating permit execution.
  • Must have the ability to maintain proficiency in all BMS EOHSS standards.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in managing site environmental program and leading others through change.
  • Attends to multiple high-priority issues simultaneously with calm.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; communicates orally with clarity and command.
  • Proclivity for partnership and cross-team collaboration; coordinates between site and above-site entities.
  • Escalates issues with urgency to facilitate ease of resolution.
  • Strong leadership skills and previous management experience is a plus.
  • Detailed proficiency in MS Excel, Word, PowerPoint, SharePoint; aptitude and ability to learn EOHSS specific systems such as ENABLON, Enfos, Enhesa.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in natural or physical science, engineering, or equivalent. Advanced degree preferred (with an environmental focus).
  • Prefer certification through an accredited organization. Representative certifications include: PE, CIH, CSP, CHMM, CIA, ISO-LEAD, CQA, CQE, ASCE-sustainability in addition to six sigma certification (green belt or above).
  • At least 15 years of environmental experience in an industrial environment required.
