Job Overview:

Assistant Project Manager, Heavy Civil / Highway

Richmond, VA area · Onsite · $110,000 to $145,000 · Direct hire

Build your career with a heavy civil contractor that has been building Virginia's infrastructure for over 50 years. The company is family-owned and self-performs heavy civil, heavy highway, site development and utility work for federal, state, municipal and private customers, in Virginia and North Carolina. Its Richmond-area backlog is growing, and it develops project managers rather than renting them.

You would be paired with a Senior Project Manager on active heavy civil and highway projects and handed real responsibility from day one. This is not a "watch and learn" seat. As you prove out, you take on owner and inspector contact, schedule updates and change management, with a defined runway to running your own projects on a team where the PMs came up the same path.

What you would do

  • Drive submittals, RFIs and procurement schedules so field crews stay ahead of the work
  • Coordinate subcontractors and supplier purchase orders to protect schedule commitments
  • Track quantities, production and costs against budget, and flag variances early
  • Support monthly payment requisitions, cost projections and project documentation
  • Join weekly project team meetings on schedule and cost, and learn how profitable projects are actually run
  • Support a safety culture that is lived at every level of the project

What you need

  • 2 to 5 years on heavy civil, highway or utility projects, as a field engineer, project engineer or current assistant PM
  • Working knowledge of construction scheduling and cost tracking
  • B.S. in Civil Engineering or Construction Management, and/or equivalent field experience
  • Based in, or willing to relocate to, the Richmond area
  • Valid driver's license and a good driving record. Travel is mostly local

A plus

  • HeavyJob, Bluebeam or Primavera P6 exposure
  • VDOT project experience

Details

  • $110,000 to $145,000 base, depending on skills and experience
  • Health, vision and dental insurance, plus an FSA program
  • 401(k) with 4% company match
  • 120 hours of paid time off in year one, plus 8 paid holidays and a floating holiday
  • Onsite in the Richmond, VA area. Relocation assistance is available for the right candidate
  • All inquiries handled confidentially
  • Direct hire, one opening
