The Assistant Plant Manager will be responsible for working closely with the Plant Manager in managing all operational and financial performance aspects of leading the manufacturing operations including adherence to the Millwood mission statement, overseeing and coordinating all manufacturing and production processes, ensuring optimal efficiency and productivity, maintaining the highest standards in our quality and safety programs and adhering to financial performance budgets and expectations.
Responsibilities:
- Plant and Operations Management:
- Assist Plant Manager and oversee and manage all day-to-day operations of the lumber and pallet manufacturing plant operations and ensuring efficient production processes and meeting production targets.
- Develop production plans and schedules, considering factors such as customer orders, raw material availability, and production capacity.
- Monitor daily production activities and production flow and output and adjust production workflows to meet schedules accordingly.
- Ensure efficient operations and productivity of lumber production and sawmill equipment.
- Identify bottlenecks and areas of inefficiency and opportunities for process improvement and develop solutions to enhance productivity and reduce downtime.
- Coordinate with sales and logistics departments to ensure timely delivery of products to customers.
- Monitor inventory levels and work closely with procurement to maintain optimal stock levels of raw materials and finished goods.
- Develop and implement operational strategies, policies, procedures and production schedules to ensure smooth production processes and timely delivery of finished products to meet customer demands.
- Proactively review, plan and execute to insure achievement of monthly and annual financial budget goals and expectations.
- Monitor and analyze production data and metrics to identify areas for improvement and implement changes and processes to optimize efficiencies.
- Ensure compliance with industry regulations, safety standards, and environmental guidelines.
- Team Leadership, Supervision and Development:
- Lead, supervise, mentor, and motivate a Team of production staff, supervisors, and other employees, fostering a culture of safety, teamwork, accountability, and continuous improvement.
- Recruit, train, and develop personnel.
- Conduct performance evaluations, provide feedback, and implement training and development programs to enhance employee performance and growth.
- Foster a safe working environment, ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations and promoting a strong safety culture.
- Provide servant centered leadership and guidance to the Production Team, fostering a positive and productive work environment.
- Quality Control and Assurance:
- Establish and maintain quality control measures to ensure the production of high-quality lumber and pallets that meet industry standards and customer specifications.
- Conduct regular inspections of materials, equipment, and production processes to identify potential issues or non-compliance and implement corrective actions.
- Collaborate with the quality assurance team to develop and enforce quality assurance procedures and protocols.
- Cost Control and Budgeting:
- Ensure achievement of budgeted financial performance goals. Monitor production costs and identify opportunities to reduce expenses while maintaining product quality.
- Assist in developing and managing the monthly and annual production budget ensuring effective utilization of resources.
- Maintenance and Equipment Management:
- Coordinate with maintenance staff to ensure the regular maintenance, repair, and optimization of machinery and equipment to minimize downtime and maximize operational efficiency.
- Develop and implement preventive maintenance programs and monitor equipment performance to identify potential issues and address them proactively.
- Collaborate with procurement and supply chain teams to ensure an adequate supply of raw materials, equipment, and spare parts.
- Continuous Improvement and Cost Optimization:
- Identify opportunities for process improvements, cost reductions, and efficiency enhancements through the application of Lean Manufacturing principles.
- Implement strategies to minimize waste, streamline production processes, and improve overall plant performance.
- Monitor and analyze key performance indicators (KPIs) to track progress, identify bottlenecks, and implement corrective actions.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Operations Management or a related field or equivalent experience in similar role.
- Proven experience as an Assistant Plant Manager or in a similar manufacturing leadership role, preferably in the lumber or pallet manufacturing industry.
- Strong experience in lumber manufacturing and knowledge of lumber and pallet manufacturing processes, equipment, and quality standards.
- Demonstrated expertise in lean manufacturing methodologies and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Excellent leadership and Team management skills, with the ability to motivate and develop a diverse workforce.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a track record of implementing effective solutions.
- Proficient in utilizing technology and manufacturing software systems.
- Solid understanding of health and safety regulations and practices.
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
