Position Summary
The Assistant Feed Mill Manager supports the daily operations of the feed mill, ensuring the efficient production of high-quality feed for operations. This role assists in supervising mill staff, maintaining equipment reliability, managing inventory, and ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards. The position plays a key role in optimizing production, supporting preventative maintenance, and driving continuous improvement initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
Operations & Production
- Assist in overseeing daily feed mill operations, including batching, grinding, pelleting, and loadout
- Ensure production schedules are met to support live production requirements
- Monitor feed quality, consistency, and adherence to formulation specifications
- Support coordination of ingredient receiving, storage, and usage
Team Leadership
- Supervise and support feed mill employees across shifts
- Assist with training, coaching, and performance management
- Promote a culture of safety, accountability, and teamwork
- Step in to lead operations in the absence of the Feed Mill Manager
Maintenance & Reliability
- Partner with maintenance teams to ensure equipment uptime and reliability
- Support implementation of preventive maintenance programs
- Assist in troubleshooting mechanical and operational issues
- Monitor equipment performance and recommend improvements
Inventory & Cost Control
- Track inventory levels of ingredients, micro-ingredients, and supplies
- Assist in ordering and managing feed ingredients and materials
- Help control costs through efficient production practices and waste reduction
Safety & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with all safety programs, including OSHA standards
- Support feed safety programs and regulatory requirements (FDA, FSMA)
- Maintain accurate production, safety, and quality records
- Enforce proper housekeeping and sanitation standards
Continuous Improvement
- Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, reduce downtime, and enhance product quality
- Support implementation of Lean manufacturing and process improvement initiatives
- Assist with capital projects, upgrades, and process enhancements
Qualifications
Required
- High school diploma or equivalent
- 3+ years of experience in feed mill operations, grain handling, or related manufacturing environment
- 1+ year of leadership or supervisory experience
- Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, production-driven environment
Preferred
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Animal Science, or related field
- Experience in poultry, livestock, or feed manufacturing operations
- Knowledge of batching systems, pelleting, and grain handling equipment
- Familiarity with preventive maintenance programs and CMMS systems
- Understanding of feed safety regulations and quality standards
Work Environment
- Industrial feed mill setting with exposure to dust, noise, and moving equipment
- Requires standing, walking, climbing, and lifting up to 50 lbs
- May require working weekends, holidays, and extended hours as needed
- Must follow PPE and safety protocols at all times
