The Assistant Controller will report to the Controller and will help to manage/oversee the organization’s accounting activities, including producing accurate and timely financial and management reports, managing accounting processes and systems, and ensuring that reported results comply with generally accepted accounting principles. Lead, develop, and mentor all direct reports, providing support within their roles.


Note: This position will work onsite in our Parlier, CA office. 


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Accounting:

  • Assist the Controller in the direction of the accounting functions of the organization, ensuring the timeliness and accuracy of financial statements.
  • Manage and supervise the Accounts Receivable (AR) department, ensuring timely billing and collections.
  • Assist in the month-end close process, including preparing and reviewing month-end journal entries, ensuring accuracy of all company statements. 
  • Assist in the preparation of financial statements, including the annual audited financial statements with footnote disclosures.
  • Prepare and/or review monthly reconciliations of bank accounts, accounts receivable, accounts payable, fixed assets, and other general ledger accounts.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of new procedures and features to enhance the workflow of the department.
  • Evaluate and recommend process improvements using newer technologies. 
  • Work with the Controller to integrate the new ERP within O’Neill and ensure adherence to the new system requirements. 

Internal Controls:

  • Evaluate the current status of internal controls and recommend annual updates of processes across departments. 
  • Document and implement internal controls, accounting policies, procedures, and systems, increasing our capabilities and accuracy annually. 
  • Serve as a primary liaison to external auditors.

Forecasting and Long-Range Planning:

  • Work with Commercial Finance and Operations Finance to support the monthly Opportunities and Risk (O&R) process for O’Neill.
  • Use the O&R and P&Ls provided by the team to maintain a rolling company P&L, Balance Sheet, and Cash Flow for review with the CFO. 
  • Work with FP&A to continue to enhance O’Neill capital planning processes, including reviews of ROIC with functional areas requesting investment.
  • Work with FP&A, Cost Accounting, and Grape Supply to create processes for creating and reconciling variances to manufacturing processes quarterly. 
  • Support the CFO on M&A as needed. 
  • Provide training to new and existing staff as needed 
  • AD-HOC projects and reports as requested by management
  • Identify and implement sustainable practices within the team/department to align with the company’s environmental goals. 


Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
  • CPA or equivalent experience is preferred. An MBA is also a plus.
  • Recent Experience in public accounting (4+ years in an audit capacity), with progressive levels of responsibility and a solid understanding of US GAAP, internal controls, and process automation preferred. 
  • Strong knowledge of inventory cost accounting and inventory control for wineries, or equivalent experience in an agriculture or manufacturing environment. 
  • Technologically savvy, with a working knowledge of Microsoft Office and ERP systems and an advanced proficiency in Excel.
  • Strong detail and accuracy orientation. Proven analytical experience in accounting/finance; undeterred by challenges lacking a standard solution.
  • Strong interpersonal and oral/written communication skills.
  • Self-motivated and self-directed; working well in a multi-task environment within the constraints of deadlines.
  • Ability to work with confidential information regularly.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Work normally occurs in a temperature-controlled office environment with low to medium noise levels.
