Job Overview:

Position Summary

The Custom Automation Machine Builder is responsible for the mechanical assembly, installation, troubleshooting, and testing of custom-designed automation equipment and machinery. This position requires the ability to interpret engineering drawings, assemble complex mechanical systems, install pneumatic and hydraulic components, and work closely with engineering and electrical teams to ensure machines meet company quality standards and customer expectations.

Because every machine is unique, this role requires a high level of mechanical aptitude, problem-solving ability, and attention to detail.

Responsibilities

Mechanical Assembly

  • Assemble custom automation equipment from engineering drawings and bills of material.
  • Install machine frames, guarding, conveyors, tooling, and mechanical components.
  • Install bearings, shafts, linear rails, ball screws, gearboxes, motors, and drive systems.
  • Build precision assemblies requiring close tolerances and alignment.
  • Perform drilling, tapping, layout, fitting, grinding, and light fabrication as required.
  • Install and adjust pneumatic and hydraulic systems.
  • Verify proper alignment, motion, and fit of mechanical assemblies.

Machine Debug & Startup

  • Assist with machine startup and mechanical debugging.
  • Diagnose and correct mechanical issues during machine testing.
  • Make engineering-directed modifications and improvements.
  • Adjust sensors, actuators, stops, and tooling for proper machine operation.
  • Work closely with Controls Engineers and Electricians during commissioning.

Print Interpretation

  • Read and interpret:
    • Mechanical assembly drawings
    • Detail drawings
    • Pneumatic schematics
    • Hydraulic schematics
    • Bills of Material

Quality & Documentation

  • Verify assemblies meet engineering specifications.
  • Report drawing discrepancies or potential design improvements.
  • Complete assembly documentation and quality checklists.
  • Maintain clean and organized work areas.
  • Follow company build standards and procedures.

Installation & Service

  • Participate in machine installation at customer facilities.
  • Perform field modifications and troubleshooting when required.
  • Support customer acceptance testing.
  • Travel for installations and service as needed.

Required Skills

  • Strong mechanical aptitude
  • Ability to read engineering prints
  • Experience using precision measuring equipment
  • Familiarity with bearings, linear motion components, and drive systems
  • Experience with pneumatic and hydraulic systems
  • Ability to safely operate overhead cranes and forklifts
  • Strong troubleshooting skills
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail

Preferred Qualifications

  • 3+ years of machine building, toolmaking, or related mechanical experience
  • Experience building custom automation equipment
  • Welding and fabrication experience
  • Experience with servo-driven machinery
  • Familiarity with robotic automation
  • Basic machining experience (mill, lathe, drill press)
  • Forklift and overhead crane experience

Physical Requirements

  • Frequently lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Stand, walk, bend, kneel, and climb throughout the workday.
  • Work from ladders, lifts, and elevated platforms as required.
  • Use hand tools and power tools continuously.
  • Perform repetitive gripping, lifting, and reaching.
  • Visual ability to inspect precision assemblies and components.

Work Environment

  • Manufacturing and machine assembly environment.
  • Exposure to moving machinery, noise, lubricants, coolants, and compressed air systems.
  • Required use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Occasional overtime and travel based on project requirements.
