Asphalt Plant Operators are responsible for the safe, efficient, and quality-focused operation of an asphalt production facility, including plant startup, shutdown, daily operation, routine maintenance, troubleshooting, and load-out activities. This role requires a strong commitment to safety, environmental compliance, product quality, and effective communication with plant personnel, drivers, contractors, and internal teams.
Granite Construction Company is a union signatory contractor, this position is covered by a Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Essential Job Accountabilities
- Operate the asphalt plant safely and efficiently while maintaining production targets and meeting quality specifications.
- Follow all company safety policies, environmental requirements, MSHA rules, and applicable regulatory standards.
- Perform plant startup, operation, shutdown, and load-out activities in a controlled and consistent manner.
- Monitor aggregate, liquid asphalt, recycled materials, temperatures, mix designs, and finished product quality to ensure compliance with project and customer specifications.
- Inspect plant equipment, work areas, stockpiles, bins, conveyors, silos, and load-out systems to identify and correct unsafe conditions or operational concerns.
- Perform routine maintenance, service, cleanup, and minor repairs to support safe and reliable plant operation.
- Troubleshoot plant downtime, equipment issues, material flow concerns, and quality deviations; communicate issues promptly and help implement corrective actions.
- Operate mobile equipment as needed, including front-end loader, skid steer, skip loader, or other equipment required to support plant operations.
- Coordinate effectively with quality control, sales, dispatch, drivers, contractors, mechanics, and plant team members to support safe production and timely delivery.
- Maintain accurate plant records, production reports, maintenance logs, inspection documentation, and other required files.
Education
- High School Diploma, GED or equivalent years of experience
Work Experience
5+ years of experience operating an asphalt hot plant preferred; experience with safe plant operation, quality control, troubleshooting, and routine maintenance strongly preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Strong commitment to safety, hazard recognition, housekeeping, and safe work practices in a plant environment.
- Ability to operate and monitor plant systems to produce consistent, specification-compliant asphalt mix.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities, respond to time-sensitive production demands, and remain focused in high-pressure situations.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office products, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and related reporting tools.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to share clear and timely information with crews, drivers, contractors, and internal teams.
- Practical knowledge of the function, operation, inspection, and maintenance of asphalt plant and material processing equipment.
- Ability to communicate professionally with customers, drivers, materials teams, and support departments.
- Ability to recognize hazards, unsafe work practices, equipment deficiencies, and quality concerns, and take appropriate corrective action.
- Flexibility to work overtime, nights, weekends, and changing schedules as production needs require.
- Ability to work independently in a plant environment while maintaining communication with the broader operations team.
- Strong organizational, scheduling, documentation, and time management skills.
- Ability to troubleshoot plant equipment, control systems, material flow, and production issues.
- Basic welding, cutting, and mechanical repair knowledge preferred.
Physical requirements include the ability to:
- Stoop, bend, and crouch
- Use hands, arms, and legs fully
- See well (either naturally or with correction)
- Lift up to 45 pounds.

- React quickly and adapt to changing production needs, equipment conditions, weather impacts, and customer requirements in a fast-paced plant environment.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and inspection-ready plant site that supports safe and quality-focused operations.

Base Hourly Wage Range :
Hourly: $63.36 $63.36
Pay may vary based on relevant experience, skills, location, and education among other factors. Collective Bargaining Agreements will govern as applicable.
