Job Overview:

Conduct chemical and physical laboratory tests to assist scientists in making qualitative and quantitative analyses of solids, liquids, and gaseous materials for research and development of new products or processes, quality control, maintenance of environmental standards, and other work involving experimental, theoretical, or practical application of chemistry and related sciences.


  • Management of technical activities for the building protection market segment of Functional Silanes in the Americas region including the interaction with customers and management of short term and long term programs. Provide technical direction to technicians and be accountable for their progress.
  • The person will be required to perform technical service and business development activities and perform the experiments that are aligned with Business Line Silane’s Building Protection segment (BP).
  • This scientist II role will consist of continuing to enhance the building protection capability at the Piscataway site and work with other applied technology scientists to deliver the highest level of technical support to all stakeholders (i.e. customers, sales, marketing, distributors).
  • The scientist II will support the Rheinfelden Silane’s Applied Technology group in development of commercial products/ processes.
  • Provide technical support to Americas customers to help implementation of sales and marketing initiatives.
  • Effectively communicate with stakeholders (e.g. customers, industry groups, sales/marketing and other Evonik groups) by demonstrating technical expertise and product knowledge.
  • Interaction with customers regarding customer projects and troubleshoots customer projects in the lab and at customer’s lab and manufacturing facilities.
  • Write proposals and protocols for formulation development on customer projects. Prepare technical reports on experiments and projects and communicate internally.
  • Develop/conduct customer presentations and demonstrations on the use of Protectosil products.
  • Support Sales/Marketing & distributors with technical presentations & product demonstrations.
  • Build strong relationships with all levels of customers’ technical teams. Build thorough knowledge of competitive products and understand competitive technical landscape.
  • Develop an understanding of end-user requirements and testing procedures & clearly communicate how Evonik product offerings can enhance application and performance.
  • Develop collaborations with other business lines and/or units and with customers.

Continue to enhance the R&D capability to support customer developments in building protection.


  • MS in Chemistry or related science, with 0-1 years of industry-related experience strongly preferred OR BS in Chemistry or related science with 1-4 years of industry-related experience strongly preferred OR; AS in Chemistry or related science with at least 6 years of industry experience.
  • Complete proficiency in English language required, including both conversational and writing skills in a business environment.
  • Ability to carry out a variety of assignments, including performing experiments of moderate complexity and difficulty and distill results into presentation form and drafts reports for manager or more-senior scientist review.
  • Within prescribed parameters, develops new or modifies existing procedures and processes.
  • With limited guidance, actively participates in customer meetings and sales presentations. May influence the direction of customer inquiries and client discussions.
  • With some guidance, investigates more complex customer complaints and inquiries, providing data and resolution proposals.
  • May be the project leader for more straightforward, shorter-term projects. May provide technical support on more complex, strategic projects as requested.
  • Developing into technical authority for given industry or field.
  • Travel (up to 25%) is required.
