Job Summary:

The Application Engineer is expected to apply a broad knowledge of silicone materials chemistry, formulation & processing to drive new opportunities and enable the successful utilization of silicone products in healthcare, medical device and/or drug delivery applications. Working collaboratively with Commercial account managers and associates within Research & Development, Quality, Operations, etc. The ideal candidate will foster business growth by providing expert technical support, guiding initial product selection and assisting customers through successful materials qualification.

He/she is expected to have a broad knowledge of silicone materials and experience in the application/utilization of materials in the fields of healthcare, medical device or drug delivery. The successful candidate will have a proven track record of leading projects to conclusion; involving participants and stakeholders across multiple functions (Sales, Manufacturing, Quality Assurance, Regulatory Affairs, etc.). This individual will be expected to handle multiple projects simultaneously; excellent program/project management skills are a must. The individual will be expected to make data-based decisions and to follow sound scientific discipline. Depending on the projects, the individual will need to possess a working knowledge of all aspects of product design, development and commercial launch, including product formulation, relevant analytical technology and functional material characterization, manufacturing process development, quality assurance and relevant regulatory considerations.

Job Description:

  • Working side-by-side with Avantor's Commercial team to generate new business opportunities and identify mutually beneficial projects with customers via market research, networking and promotion of product offerings.

  • Serving as principal technical liaison between Avantor and our customers to deliver customized solutions that meet customer material needs and drive enterprise growth for Avantor.

  • Leading / facilitating the translation of “Voice of the Customer” inputs to “Critical to Quality” material attributes and ultimately to mutually agreeable material specifications.

  • Leading / supporting Avantor's technical activities through the entire customer development process including; initial product design, design refinements, pilot-scale production, manufacturing process development and final product launch.

  • Participating in technical aspects of customer qualification processes such as design reviews, feasibility assessments, manufacturing process optimization, regulatory submissions and product launch.

  • Providing expert technical consultation and support of customer trials to ensure successful deployment of new silicone materials.

  • Coordinating with Avantor's New Product Development leads to ensure effective project execution and the capture of meaningful project metrics.

  • Interfacing with Avantor's Analytical Technology, Quality Assurance, Regulatory Affairs and Operations to ensure objectives are clearly understood and cross-functional coordination is effective.

  • Acquiring and maintaining practical technical expertise across all Avantor product offering; including basic formulation design knowledge, physical and mechanical properties, material limitations and product benefits to enable effective promotion with our customers.

  • Acquiring and maintaining practical technical understanding of customer processes to guide product recommendations and/or Avantor's product design work.

  • Acquiring and maintaining working knowledge of commercial account management and transaction processes including the use of CRM systems (i.e., SalesForce) as an essential tool.

  • Fostering a safe work environment and complying with all Standard Operating Procedures and ethical conduct requirements.

Desired Skills:

  • Practical technical knowledge of the chemistry and materials science of silicone products (polymers, resins, reinforced elastomers, adhesives, primers, inks, foams, greases).

  • Practical understanding of silicones (HCR & LSR elastomers, gels, dispersions, adhesives) for medical implants & devices and healthcare applications.

  • Practical understanding of silicone structure-property relationships as it relates to silicone- drug interactions and how to modify drug elution rates.

  • Working knowledge of silicone material manufacturing processes.

  • Demonstrated understanding of scientific research and new product development methods and their implications at different stages of the development process.

  • Rigorous scientific approach to product design and problem solving.

  • Fundamental understanding and working knowledge of statistically based quality principles and familiarity with Lean / Six Sigma methodologies

  • Extensive knowledge of customer processes (e.g., injection molding, extrusion, dip coating, spray coating, sheeting, device assembly, etc.) and end-use markets for silicones in biomaterials applications.

  • Business Acumen: understanding of markets and competition, value proposition, business cases, economics-based decision making and basic business financial terms.

  • Learning capacity and proactive drive for acquiring new relevant knowledge.

  • Ability to develop effective professional working relationships and team leadership skills.

  • B.S. in Chemistry, Engineering or Materials Science

  • 5+ years of silicone industry experience with a focus on healthcare, medical and/or drug delivery applications

  • Understanding of fabrication methods employed in silicone part / component manufacture.

  • Team leadership experience

  • Training, communication skills

  • Advanced degree in Chemistry, Engineering or Material Science and 10+ years of silicone industry experience, preferred.

  • Direct experience with healthcare product and medical device design, development, manufacture, testing and regulatory requirements, preferred.

  • At least 5 years of direct technical customer support/service experience, preferred.

  • Lean / Six sigma certifications, preferred.
