Job Overview:


Marin’s Advertising Operations Director is the Prepress Manager who supervises two advertising operations support staff and interfaces with Marin’s Publisher, Advertising Manager, Marin sales staff, Bay Area News Group production and press room staff, and outside printers and vendors to ensure ads within the daily newspaper product and website publish correctly and that monthly special sections are produced on deadline for insertion.

Essential Functions

• Management of Marin Independent Journal prepress.

• Point person for output to plate on various platforms.

• Project management that includes print bid, design, working with client, output to plate, upload to digital.

• Content collection.

• Relationships with various print houses, signing of print bids, logistics of delivery of products to locations.

• This position is responsible for daily inspection and approval of ad placements on layouts and that all ads are approved to run.

• This position is responsible for coordination of all special sections, from design to story assignments to photography collection to dummying of the sections through text and photo placement and revisions, and ultimately, output to plate for printers.

• Collaborate with Publisher and Advertising Manager to prioritize projects and workload for all team members to meet deadlines.

• This position schedules insertion orders.

• This position sends daily Credit Issues and Ad Status reports to Marin’s sales leaders and staff.

• Supervisory responsibilities include weekly meetings with two direct reports as well as weekly meetings with BANG production and Affinity workgroups, Marin advertising staff and Publisher.

Competencies & Skills

• Specific knowledge and skills needed to be successful:

• Expert level knowledge of output to plate production requirements and pagination.

• Strong spoken and written communication skills across many platforms, such as email, telephone, Google Meets and more, and a good sense of which type of communication is best for any given need.

• Carries out design projects from conception through production. Updates, refines, and enhances files for existing recurring projects. Final projects must meet precise design, production and pre-press standards, as well as budget requirements, deadlines and the satisfaction of clients. Develops and maintains professional working relationships with competent and reliable vendors who may include (but are not limited to): graphic designers, illustrators, photographers, designers, production artists and printers to assure quality work within budget and deadline.

• Skill in working independently and following through on assignments; e.g. managing and directing photo shoots, obtaining rights clearances, press checks, etc. with minimal or no direction. Ability to problem-solve, make changes and corrections as they occur, and to offer appropriate solutions in situations.

• Excellent interpersonal skills. Ability to successfully work with advertising and production teams, and many different creators with a variety of communication needs and expectations.

• Advanced Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator), Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

• Familiarity with both Mac and Windows operating systems.

• Familiarity with WordPress or similar blogging & content management tools..

• Understanding of print and digital graphic production formatting.

• Ability to read and write with proofreading marks.

Required or Preferred Education

• Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience required.

Required or Preferred Experience

• The minimum number of years in applicable industry: 7.

Work Environment

• Uses standard office equipment such as computers and phones.

• Driving is required infrequently.

• This role is currently remote but may return to in person.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms and requires the ability to occasionally lift office products and supplies up to 20 pounds.

Other Duties

Creates or supports creation of marketing collateral for special section publications, events, creates and orders business cards for employees, makes office supply orders.
