RTRC is seeking a highly motivated individual for the position of Advanced Manufacturing Integration / Convergent Manufacturing Engineer. The candidate will join the Advanced Manufacturing Team which specializes in the development and demonstration of manufacturing technologies for internal deployment as well as for external research programs across a variety of technical areas including machining, repair, additive manufacturing, robotic automation, surface treatment, sensing, amongst many others. The successful candidate will be responsible for the development, testing, optimization, and demonstration of novel manufacturing processes, with focus on integrating multiple manufacturing methods to achieve improved system performance, reduced manufacturing and assembly time & cost, amongst other benefits. The individual will capture data from process equipment as well as deploy additional sensors to gain process insight, optimize process parameters, and enable integration and automation across a wide variety of manufacturing technologies. The individual will participate in project meetings with cross-functional teams, support project reviews with internal and external customers, contribute to strategy and roadmap exercises, originate new ideas, define new projects, and pursue R&D funding from internal and external sources. The individual will work with the team in a fast-paced, R&D environment alongside leading scientists and colleagues from across RTRC and the greater RTX organization (including Collins Aerospace, Pratt & Whitney, and Raytheon) to conceive, develop, and demonstrate next generation technologies for Aerospace and Defense applications.

What You Will Do:

  • Development and deployment of advanced manufacturing equipment, including integration of sensors, industrial robotics, motion platforms, and process equipment (e.g., cutting, deburring, welding, additive manufacturing)

  • Integration and optimization of advanced manufacturing workflows, leveraging robotic/CNC motion platforms and process monitoring techniques

  • Data analysis and process optimization to gain insights and improve manufacturing process throughput, quality, and cost

  • Troubleshoot process and equipment issues and make necessary adjustments to achieve desired project outcomes

  • Partner with engineers, technicians, and subject matter experts to identify and pursue technology initiatives

  • Support strategy development, participate in cross-business technology roadmapping, and develop marketing campaigns in pursuit of R&D funding from internal and external sources

  • Work safely at all times, following all safety protocols and procedures

  • Comply with all company policies and procedures

Qualifications You Must Have:

  • Bachelor's degree in Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science Engineering, or related field and 8+ years of related work experience or a Master's degree with 5+ years of related work experience or a PhD with 3+ years of related work experience.

  • Experience with industrial robotics (e.g., ABB, FANUC, KUKA, etc.) and/or related automation technologies
  • Background with manufacturing process automation including programming (robotic, PLC, etc.)

  • Hands-on experience with manufacturing processes and equipment and experience with process sensing and monitoring equipment, data collection and analysis

  • U.S. Person (U.S. citizen, permanent resident, refugee or asylee) or eligible to obtain necessary export authorizations required.

Qualifications We Prefer:

  • Knowledge of robotic programming (e.g., ABB RAPID, KUKA KRL) and offline toolpath generation software (e.g., RobotStudio, RoboDK, Robotmaster) and a familiarity with multi-robot platforms and coordinated motion and knowledge of robotic/motion control methods, including force control, vision, and end effector design and CNC and/or robotic programming using Siemens NX CAM

  • Hands on experience with welding or metal additive manufacturing / 3D printing and a familiarity with machining, coating, assembly, and advanced manufacturing methods

  • Experience with 3D CAD modeling (SolidWorks, Siemens NX, Catia, etc.) and scripting experience with Matlab, Python, VBA, JavaScript or similar

  • Understanding of metallurgy and structure-processing-property relationships as applied to aerospace alloys

  • Experience working with DOD and other government agencies and a demonstrated experience writing proposals and leading R&D projects

Minimum Program Qualifications:

The salary range for this role is 96,000 USD - 200,000 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.
