What you will do

The Advanced Manufacturing Engineering and CI Director will be responsible for driving the strategic implementation of advanced manufacturing engineering practices and lean methodologies across manufacturing plants in the UK, EU, and North America. This leadership role requires a visionary and results-oriented professional capable of fostering a culture of continuous improvement and operational excellence. The Director will collaborate with cross-functional teams to optimise processes, enhance productivity, and ensure alignment with customer and organizational objectives. By leveraging advanced technologies and best practices, the Director will support the development of scalable and efficient manufacturing systems that meet global standards, while driving innovation and competitiveness in a dynamic market environment.

How you will do it

  • Leadership and Strategy:
  • Guide Plant and Manufacturing Engineering teams in the development and implementation of advanced manufacturing strategies and lean initiatives that align with customer needs and organizational objectives.
  • Promote a culture of continuous improvement and operational excellence across manufacturing operations, by leveraging Hoshin Kanri and Transformation Mapping methodologies.

  • Process Optimization:
  • Lead analysis and re-engineering of manufacturing processes to eliminate waste, reduce cycle times, reduce lead times and improve overall efficiency.
  • Implement lean principles, including Value Stream Mapping, 5S, Kaizen events, and Six Sigma methodologies, to enhance productivity and reduce costs.

  • Advanced Technologies:
  • Evaluate and integrate advanced manufacturing technologies (e.g., automation, digital manufacturing, IoT connectivity) to drive effective daily management, production capabilities and productivity.
  • Stay current with industry trends and innovations to ensure the organisation remains competitive.

  • Technology Road Mapping:
  • Ensure that technology roadmaps are closely aligned with the organisation’s strategic objectives and effectively guide strategic investment strategy.
  • Foster collaboration and communication among key stakeholders, ensuring buy-in and support for technology initiatives.

  • Benchmarking and Best Practice:
  • Conduct external and internal technology benchmarking to compare and leverage best practice technology processes, performance metrics, and capabilities against industry leading standards.

  • Capital Investment Management:
  • Lead cross-functional teams in the execution of capital projects and process improvement initiatives, ensuring they are completed on time, within budget, and to specified quality standards.

  • Collaboration and Communication:
  • Collaborate with product development, quality assurance, supply chain, and other departments to ensure alignment of manufacturing processes with product design and customer requirements.
  • Communicate effectively with stakeholders at all levels, providing updates on project status, performance metrics, and improvement initiatives.

  • Training and Development:
  • Develop and implement training programs to enhance the skills of manufacturing personnel in lean methodologies and advanced manufacturing technologies.
  • Mentor and coach team members, fostering a culture of knowledge sharing and continuous learning.

  • Performance Measurement:
  • Establish and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) to assess the effectiveness of manufacturing processes and lean initiatives.
  • Conduct regular reviews of performance data to identify areas for improvement and implement corrective actions as needed.

  • Compliance and Safety:
  • Ensure compliance with industry regulations, safety standards, and environmental requirements.
  • Promote a safe working environment by implementing best practices in safety and risk management.

  • Reporting Relationships:
  • Reports to VP Operations Global Fire.
  • Dotted line reporting of all Manufacturing Engineering and CI leads across the network.
  • Direct contact with Plant Managers and staff.
  • Stakeholder contact across GP Executive staff and their teams as required.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in manufacturing engineering, Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
  • 10 years of experience in manufacturing engineering or operations management, with a strong focus on lean manufacturing and process improvement.
  • Proven leadership experience, with the ability to drive cultural change and engage teams in continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a data-driven approach to decision-making.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, capable of collaborating with cross-functional teams and engaging stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in manufacturing software and tools (e.g., CAD, ERP, MES systems, data analytics).
  • Certification in Lean Manufacturing or Six Sigma (Kaizen Leader, Black Belt) is highly desirable.
