Job Overview:

Uses a computer, receives emergency calls from the public requesting police, fire, medical or other
emergency services. Determines the nature and location of the emergency; determines priorities, and
dispatches police, fire, ambulance or other emergency units as necessary and in accordance with
established procedures. Receives and processes 911 emergency calls. Monitor direct emergency alarms,
answer non-emergency calls for assistance. Enters, updates, and retrieve information from a variety of
computer systems. Monitors several complex public safety radio frequencies. Operate a variety of
communications equipment, including radio consoles, telephones and computer systems.
* On an assigned shift in the Fire Department Communications Center, receives incoming radio and
telephone calls and evaluates request for fire and emergency medical services.
* Makes note of essential incident information from callers.
* Determines the nature and extent of the request, the priority of the problem and the need for
dispatching fire units and/or transferring the call to the appropriate agency.
* Determines the appropriate unit to dispatch.
* Monitors emergency frequencies.
* Answers routine inquiries and refers calls not requiring dispatches to the appropriate personnel or
* Understand and follow both oral and written instructions promptly and accurately.
* Communicate effectively in the English language in both written and oral forms.
* Reason and act decisively under stressful and/or emergency situations.
* Operate and maintain 9-1-1 and business telephone equipment.
* Establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of
required duties.
* Read and interpret maps and information form a computer screen.
* Sit or stand for extended periods.
* Operate the National Fire Incident Reporting System (NFIRS), for incident tracking.
* A respect for private confidential information.
* Able to remain calm in stressful situations.
Educational Equivalent:
* Must possess high school diploma or equivalent.
* Valid California Class C Driver's License.
* Minimum of 1-year experience as a 911 or Police/Fire dispatcher.

* Telecommunicator I
* Telecommunicator II
* HazMat Awareness
* Department of Defense Tele-Communicator I & II and HazMat Awareness certifications within 6 months of employment (provided by the company)
* Emergency Medical Dispatcher within 3 months of employment (provided by the company)
* Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certificate, within 3 months of employment
Skills Required:
* Assist the caller with pre-hospital care prior to the arrival of emergency responders.

Perform multiple tasks in a climate-controlled atmosphere. May spend long hours at a personal computing
station/dispatch console, which requires frequent sitting. Work 12-hour shifts, either days or nights as
assigned/ Communicate with the public frequently using the telephone and/or in person.
Work Week: Rotating 12 hours shifts (Days/Nights)
Work Hours: 0700-1900 or 1900-0700
Overtime: Occasionally
Travel Required: Yes, within Fort Irwin
