The 787 Deputy Chief Engineer will support Chief Engineer to ensure successful execution of all Engineering activities on the 787 Program on cost, schedule, and quality. They are the first line of delegation for Chief engineer.

As the Deputy Chief Engineer, you will work closely with SIPT leads, the Value Stream Leaders, Product Line leadership, and Power & Controls Operations to ensure the efficient Communication and alignment of priorities.

The role is based in Windsor Locks, CT. This role is a hybrid role and averages 2-3 days on-site per week based on project/ customer needs. Travel time is up to 20%

The primary responsibilities for the 787 Deputy Chief are:

  • Work with 787 Chief Engineer to drive engineering organization to meet strategic goals for the platform
  • Support 787 Chief Engineer taking ownership the CFE budget for the 787 Value Stream. This includes establishing the yearly/long range plans and then managing the budgets. The SIPT System Leads and CIPT Product Line Leads are accountable for managing the budgets at their respective level.
  • Manage assigned AOG, pack line, and urgent part questions. Create team and plan to resolve issues.
  • Execute engineering projects with quality on cost and on schedule
  • Lead a multi-disciplinary team to drive creative solutions to issues that arise throughout the value stream - from Collins/supplier manufacturing on to the customer manufacturing process and through to the airline fleet operations
  • Communicate to senior management at Collins and Boeing for key projects status and risks including escalating issues/resource gaps to the 787 Chief Engineer, Value Stream Leaders, the Boeing Commercial Program Chief Engineer and/or the Boeing Legacy Program & SIPT Chief Engineer, where appropriate.
  • Learn and become proficient in the system architecture, performance, and operation of the 787 Environmental Control system including Cabin Air conditioning and Temperature Control System (CACTCS), Liquid Cooling System (LCS) and Protection System (PS)
  • Eliminate barriers / roadblocks for 787 ECS engineering team to enable them to hit targets. Escalate where appropriate to proactively mitigate emerging issues & risks.
  • Puts a priority on managing scope creep by communicating and seeking authorization from the Value Stream Lead (VSL) prior to working on new scope (including new scope requested by customer)
  • In addition, the 787 Deputy Chief is responsible for maintaining positive customer experiences for Boeing and the fleet operators through the successful execution of engineering activities on cost, on schedule, and with high quality.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree (typically in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM)) and a minimum of 10 years of prior relevant experience unless prohibited by local laws/regulations. OR
  • Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 7 years of experience OR
  • In absence of a degree, 14 years of relevant experience is required
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen
  • Must be able to travel up to 20% (Domestic and International)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in quality, engineering, operations, in aerospace, automotive or high-tech electronic, defense or commercial industries is desired
  • Ability to work effectively across organizational boundaries with Product Line Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, Materials, Drafting, and Procurement
  • Strong communication and strong interpersonal skills
  • Experience in design process and functional requirements.
  • Experience with Root Cause investigations – e.g. experience with any of the following: Fault Trees, Fish Bone Diagrams, Red-X, etc.
  • Experience communicating to executive leadership and with customers
