Summary of Job:

The 5-Axis Set up machinist is responsible for setting up CNC machine tools with proper tooling and offsets required to manufacture and repair fluid film bearings, seals, aerospace, and defense related parts. The ideal candidate will be a Journeyman Machinist with a diverse skill set.

Some key responsibilities include:

  • Manufacture and inspect detailed parts and tools from blueprints, sketches, drawings, and verbal instructions using a variety of cutting tools and equipment including right angle heads

  • Ability to use mathematical and geometrical calculations.

  • Determine how to set up machines based on instructional route sheets

  • Responsible for keeping the work area clean and free from safety hazards and maintaining acceptable quality and efficiency levels.

  • Must be able to utilize precision measuring instruments (e.g., Dial calipers, micrometers, surface gauges, dial indicators) to maintain dimensional accuracy and specified tolerances during machining operations

  • Make all corrections as needed by editing the program.

  • Make necessary notations for changes or corrections in the control.

  • Provide timely information regarding problems in production that may adversely affect quality, delivery, or customer requirements.

  • Make suggestions for further improvements in the program to shorten run times

  • Analyze tooling, setups, and procedures and make recommendations for improvements.

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret complex technical drawings

  • Loading, unloading heavy parts using overhead cranes and best rigging practices

Qualifications Desired:

  • Proficient in 5-axis machine tool setup and operation
  • Technical degree from a trade school or community college; or 5 years of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical procedures and company, customer, and governmental specifications and regulations.
  • Familiar with DMG MORI, Okuma, Hyundai, Fanuc, and other machine tools
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers and co-workers.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
  • Knowledge of basic manufacturing and machining operations relevant to a company manufacturing and repairing fluid film bearings.
  • General knowledge of machining processes (including cutting fluids, surface finishes, and tolerances, turning, drilling, milling, and abrasive processes.)
  • General familiarity with materials (steels, nonferrous metals, and alloys).
  • Aerospace Experience a Plus
