The Principal Specialist, Manufacturing/Operations leads workforce development across manufacturing operations, including onboarding, technical and practical training, shop‑floor qualifications, skills management, performance monitoring, and employee engagement. This role ensures employees are fully prepared, trained, and certified to meet production, quality, safety, and customer requirements in a high‑performance environment.

Success in this position requires strong coordination, communication, and cross‑functional collaboration. The Principal Specialist supports employee development, ensures training compliance, and drives continuous improvement through effective qualification and workforce development practices.

This position works onsite in San Marcos, TX. - (Great Austin Area)

What You Will Do:

  • Lead and coordinate onboarding activities for new employees within manufacturing operations, ensuring successful integration into production processes, safety standards, quality expectations, and operational procedures.

  • Develop and deliver theoretical training programs within the Advanced Proficiency Cell to strengthen employee technical competency, process understanding, and operational readiness.

  • Coordinate and oversee shop floor training activities utilizing structured On-the-Job Training (OJT) methodologies to ensure workforce qualification, standardized execution, and compliance with operational requirements.

  • Maintain and update the Multi-Skill Matrix to accurately track employee qualifications, certifications, training progression, and workforce flexibility across operational areas.

  • Support and coordinate employee engagement activities across the manufacturing site to promote teamwork, inclusion, employee morale, and a positive work environment.

  • Coordinate the placement and management of operational shopping carts, tools, materials, and support resources required to sustain manufacturing activities and operational flow.

  • Monitor operational performance through deployed manufacturing systems, dashboards, and tracking tools to ensure visibility to production metrics, workforce readiness, operational efficiency, and training effectiveness.

  • Update operational scorecards, training metrics, workforce qualification records, and performance tracking reports to support leadership visibility, accountability, and operational decision-making.

  • Partner with operations leadership, supervisors, quality, engineering, and training teams to identify workforce development needs and support production requirements.

  • Ensure training documentation, qualification records, and operational certifications remain current, accurate, and compliant with company procedures and customer requirements.

  • Support continuous improvement initiatives related to training effectiveness, workforce capability development, standard work, operational performance, and employee engagement.

  • Promote an environment of safety, accountability, teamwork, continuous learning, and operational excellence throughout manufacturing operations.

  • Travel up to 25%

Qualifications You Must Have:

  • Typically requires a University Degree or equivalent experience and minimum 5 years prior relevant experience, or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 3 years’ experience

  • Experience in workforce training, skills development, and operational qualification processes.

  • Experience in KPI-driven manufacturing environments, operational performance systems, and production execution processes.

Qualifications We Prefer:

  • Experience in fast paced, high-mix aerospace or precision metal manufacturing environments (machining, fabrication, assembly, or similar) with multiple competing priorities.

  • Experience delivering and coordinating shop floor training using structured methodologies (OJT, standard work, competency-based training).

  • Ability to manage skills matrices, training records, dashboards, and operational scorecards.

  • Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills with the ability to train and develop others effectively.

  • Experience working in cross-functional and matrixed manufacturing organizations.

  • Lean Manufacturing or Continuous Improvement experience

The salary range for this role is 86,800 USD - 165,200 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.
